Industry of Machines presents Supply Records:
Since the first release by B-tracks, a duo by John Barera and Soren Jahan, appeared out of the woodwork on the then-new Supply Records in 2011, we here at Industry of Machines have kept a close eye on the obviously-watchable imprint. Rising quickly to international attention and making a PanoramaBar debut after only a few EPs on their own label, the duo quickly made an impression in the more taste-oriented corners of the dance community and have built on strengths since to become, separately and together, two of the more notable American producers and DJs to emerge from a rapidly growing scene. Soren's releases as Rene Audiard and Mechaniker on Supply and his numerous other aliases, mostly found on his own Blank Slate, have helped to keep the heat up on his end, but Barera has been busy too with solo and duo projects, most notably dropping an EP on Steffi's Dolly imprint with frequent collaborator Will Martin. We weren't willing to wait for one of Soren's rare trips back to the States to give the label the showcase they deserve, and with an LP on Dolly dropping this month from Will and John, we feel the occasion has arrived to give two US producers a release party and a reward for building a resume of high quality, well-received work that has already gone far past the confines of this country.
As the head of Supply and the author or co-author of nearly half of the catalogue, John Barera should be familiar to followers of the label and also to fans of Bossa Nova Civic Club, where he has strongly held down a series of residencies since the earliest days of the club's existence. We're no stranger to his fierce DJ sets, a product of long experience behind the decks, but we were very pleased to see John finally getting some well-deserved recognition with a full RA feature and in-depth interview exploring his daytime contributions at the legendary Forced Exposure distributor in Massachusetts and the work he has been doing keeping the nighttime in that city alive, never the easiest place for dance music. For us, it's great news to see scenes growing outside of NYC and to be connected to those people involved, and even past the many memorable records Supply has already put under it's belt, it made us even more happy to see John moving on to international recognition with the EP and LP on Dolly. Barera plays regularly for IofM friends Jack Dept. NYC, but we wanted to give him a chance to do his own thing for the entire night and give Brooklyn a taste of how Boston gets things done as he holds down the center position for Supply's first-ever NYC showcase.
Their resumes may so far be limited to co-production credits alongside Barera, but with his position on the rise and the strong support he affords his label artists, the future is looking bright for Will Martin and newcomer Paul Morse. Martin is John's roommate in Boston and his most frequent partner-in-crime, having been responsible for co-authoring an EP on Supply with the label head as well as for being equal partners on the Dolly LP and EP that brought them greater recognition. Steffi's label is a closely-watched source for material she slides nimbly into her always-slamming sets, ranging from techno to electro and into deepest house with names like XDB, Steven Tang / Obsolete Music Technology, Jared Wilson, Brooks Mosher, and others having made single or repeat appearances. As famous for quality as it is for tight curation, it is telling that the work of Barera and Martin comprises the label's first-ever LP. Morse is one of the freshest faces on Supply and so far has just a few bits to his name; his debut live set should be full of pleasant surprises. Martin has already announced a stronger presence, so we have no no doubt of the kind of sound he will bring when he delivers a debut DJ set in NYC as Supply's rising star to back up Barera's already-established reputation.
As a special last minute guest, we're pleased to announce the addition of Heatsick to an already-strong bill. Known for his work on Bill Kouligas' PAN label and his collaborations with Mark Fell, Heatsick toes a fine line between his devotion to proper house music and much more esoteric impulses, as evidenced in his recent PAN albums and EPs. His music deconstructs house while adding layers of complex musical and political overtones to it, but it's impossible to miss his dedication to the roots of the genre. For his special appearance on this night, he'll be delivering one of his all-live, improvised Casio sets, always a treat for those not familiar, which split the difference between his interests in unique ways while remaining stripped down and direct.
