LA 4 GAZA | Nguzunguzu, Awesome Tapes from Africa, Omar Offendum, Discostan more

  • Discostan and Radio Sombra present LA 4 GAZA, a benefit event mobilizing socially conscious artists to assist the civilians of Gaza in the aftermath of the most recent 50-day war waged against them. All funds collected from this event will go to PCRF - Palestine Children's Relief Fund (www.pcrf.net). #LA4GAZA **** NGUZUNGUZU Raised on 90s R&B/Hip-Hop radio and underground club music, the Los Angeles based duo (Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda) dig deep to complement the explicitly experimental modern sounds of international club music with some of the freshest urban pop happening now. Nguzunguzu, which takes its name from a traditional Solomon Island figurehead used to protect against supernatural forces during canoe trips, offers a unique blend of R&B, rap, club, house, kuduro, and grime. https://soundcloud.com/nguzunguzu Awesome Tapes From Africa Through his blog, Awesome Tape From Africa, Brian Shimkovitz proves the point over and over again. While researching the local music scene in Ghana on a Fulbright scholarship, Brian discovered the regional cassette tape merchants. Upon listening and realizing that the music was often unlike anything else going in the globe, he decided to put some of the songs up on a blog he eloquently dubbed Awesome Tapes From Africa. Since then, the blog has developed a cult following, and Shimkovitz often finds himself DJing his collection at parties all over the globe. He often DJ’s using only cassette decks, and to further his populist approach, every song he plays is available to download on the blog. http://www.awesometapes.com/ OMAR OFFENDUM Omar Offendum is a Syrian American hip-hop artist and peace activist. He was born in Saudi Arabia, raised in Washington, DC, and now lives in Los Angeles, California. He tours the world performing at international music festivals, lecturing at major academic institutions and fundraising for humanitarian relief organizations. Most recently Offendum has been involved in creating several critically acclaimed songs about the popular democratic uprisings throughout the Middle East & North Africa. http://offendum.bandcamp.com/ + A VERY SPECIAL SURPRISE GUEST DJ sets by: Discostan Discostan is a funky dance party in Los Angeles, every second Wednesday of the month, featuring Bollywood, Balkan, bhangra, Algerian raï, Arabic dabke, silky soukous, Persian pop, and all manner of delights from Beirut to Bangkok via Bombay. https://www.facebook.com/Discostan **** Live painting and installations: Shrine Shrine is a muralist and installation artist whose large-scale temples and shacks are made from trash and found objects. His towering sculptures have become fixtures at art and music festivals across the world, most notably at Burning Man and Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. He has exhibited at Yerba Buena Arts Center in San Francisco and, most recently, the Craft & Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles. www.empireoflove.org Aly Timbuctustate Kourouma Graffiti artist Aly Kourouma is Fulani from his mother and Malinke from his father, Guinean by birth and Senegalese by adoption, raised with 4 different languages, and immersed in a heavy French-Catholic brainwashing education system. In that maze of cultural possibilities, the murals of the N’debele women of Southern Africa are a great inspiration to him in the ways they merge tribal art with urban iconography. That fuzzy area between indigenous and urban cultures is his favorite playground. https://www.facebook.com/aly.t.kourouma **** ECHOPLEX 1154 Glendale Blvd. Los Angeles, 90026 $18 pre-sale, $20 at the door 18+ Pre-sale tickets: http://www.theecho.com/event/695703/ #LA4GAZA
