After a hiatus of 18 years, Grammy-nominated, Brit Award-winning singer Neneh Cherry has released her 4th solo album ‘Blank Project’ to a chorus of praise for her creative reinvention.
She is set to bring the new sound, and acclaimed new live show, to Melbourne for a one-off performance at Hamer Hall.
‘Blank Project’ has been hailed as a reinvigoration and a reminder of Neneh’s counter-cultural origins that were evident in her stellar solo debut Raw Like Sushi (1989). The record was produced by Four Tet, with Neneh’s wildly poetic vocals backed by just two instruments, the skeletal drums and sync duo RocketNumberNine AKA Ben and Tom Page. The result is a brooding backdrop that nods to anarchic free jazz, post-punk, sound system culture and the trip hop Neneh was so instrumental in incubating. The live show is the unmissable product of this thrilling new creative chapter.
Neneh’s soul-flooded vocals are raw and disarming and in terms of energy at least, there is little to separate her from the teenager who tore up the UK and further afield with her scruffy, revolutionary post-punk group Rip Rig + Panic. But musically, this is a departure from anything she has done before. Elements of beat poetry, avant-electronica and beautiful vocal melodies combine to make pop music that sounds like nothing else you could call pop music. It’s a record that uses simple ideas to create something entirely original.
