Social Studies presents DJ Nature

  • Social Studies is turning 3 years this month!!! And to celebrate, we bring you an idol of ours...An Englishman in New York… Milo Johnson a.k.a DJ Nature is one of the most elusive artists. But before the why ?...you have to understand his involvement with music over the past 3 decades. From his legendary Bristol Sound System roots, to his move in the late 80's to NYC, Milo has been at the forefront of a lot important instances in underground music, fashion and the culture surrounding it. Upon arrival to the U.S, his days were spent setting up a trading company, supplying Records, Fashion & Streetwear with his wife back to Japan. Upon nightfall, he frequented house and disco clubs to hear legendary DJ’s Like Larry Levan (at The Choice), Louie Vega (at the Sound Factory Bar) or Tony Humphries (in New Jersey's legendary Zanzibar). Milo’s love of raw early House music and a friendship with Frank Mendez from Nu Groove Records, helped lead him to begin his own early productions under his Nature Boy moniker for Black Label NYC and Tomato Records in the U.K. Supported by the Legendary Tony Humphries on the early 90’s Kiss FM New York radio mix show, Ruff Disco Vol.1 EP and Necessary Ruffness Vol.1 & 2, were 2 of his early personal highlights as a House producer. Today these 2 records are considered holy grails in the Deep House circles. Another highlight was also the now sought after remix for the Carl Craig/Naomi project on I Ner Zon Sounds, a sublabel of Planet E. This year, a track from Milo's Nature Boy days was included in the critically acclaimed compilation by Parisian label My Love Is Underground; a label famous for resurfacing forgotten and undiscovered classics from the golden era of NY/NJ Deep House. A multifaceted producer, In his DJ Milo guise, he helped create the disco breaks/ old school cut up classic ‘Return Of The Original Artform for Japanese group/label Major Force founded by K.U.D.O. and Fashion Icon Hiroshi Fujiwara. The underground appeal of this project, catapulted to notoriety in the west in the 90's, via their release on James Lavelle's Mo'Wax imprint. Let's fast forward a second though and talk about the Return of the Savage… Milo continued to nurture that ‘ DJ Nature’ sound and with that followed some of the most exciting vinyl only releases of the past few years… Milo gives an unbounding importance to creating a ‘real’ underground sound, that timeless sound that all discerning dance floors and DJ’s have to come to need and love; a return to basics, taking only the best ingredients from a vast collection of Funk, Soul, Disco, Jazz, Reggae and New Wave. After all, that Bristol sound still resonates in his work, and yet a sound that is always uniquely DJ Nature. A steady flow of some of the most exciting music of the past few years including the (now classic and collectable double packs) on NYC’s renowned leftfield House & Disco label ‘Golf Channel Records’ including ‘Ministry Of Sound’ licensed Destiny Reprise for MOS Underground Disco compilation. The Fwd Ever e.p followed shortly on Golf Channel and found itself on regular rotation and playlists of such DJ’s as Harvey, Eddie C, Cottam, Gilles Peterson, Vakula and many others. As well as both releases ending up in numerous Top 10’s, 20s, 50’s worldwide, and let’s not forget his remix work for Japanese label Jazzy Sport Recs and Delusions Of Grandeur records and Groovement Recs to close 2010. With two well received releases unleashed again for Golf Channel and DJ Nature’s first artist album ‘Return Of The Savage’ released on Golf Channel Records. 2014 has seen Nature & Japan’s Kuniyuki releases, a limited edition box set, mix and 12 vinyl of re-edits for Golf Channel & Gimme Five & an Lp for Jazzy Sport. Remixes for 20/20 Vision, Inkswell, Wolf & Lamb and much more...always working naturally. DJ Nature touring has brought a fresh enthusiasm from younger listeners and fans new and old while he can display and share a penchant ear for great underground and leftfield house music, off the radar classics and a wealth of musical knowledge with the eager generation of underground dance music enthusiasts. To call him a DJ's DJ is an understatement, but then again with fans like DJ Harvey, it's easy to see why.
