But as he proved on his South African Music Award-winning album Home Brewed, this DJ and producer defies convention. Sidestepping Afro-house clichés and stage-managed highs in favour of restrained sophistication, Black Coffee’s penchant is for true Afropolitan house: home-brewed but trendsetting, fashion-conscious and future-focused. Expect almost sculptural balance and beauty. If one heard a clamour and ululating emanating from the eastern provinces of South Africa, Kwazula Natal and the Eastern Cape, announcing the recognition of a cultural phenomenon……and their role in the development of this cultural phenomenon…one could not argue were that clamour and ululating to be in respect of one……that is the soul, spirit, talent and vision of Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, one who most know as “Black Coffee.” DJ SOUL: One of the pioneers within the DC's house music scene, DJ Soul aka Phil has been in the nightclub scene starting as a dancer moving his way to Night club security/Management and now a Night club Promoter and House DJ for over 14 years now. Originally from Washington, DC as a single father, DJ Soul works the 9 to 5 grind to support himself and 3 sons. He always found time each week to follow his passion for house music, often working a 50 hour week then dancing supporting a House Party or spinning house a few Hours at night during the work week and on the weekends. His biggest influences include Keith Miller, Sam The Man Burns, MAW as well as a lot of House DJ's Heads too many to mention. DJ Soul's contributions to DC's house music scene are too numerous to list them all! One of the main highlights includes providing parties at larger venue Hot spots so that up and coming DJ's can get there foot in the door and show off how good they are as well as provide a space so that House heads can hear good music and work up a good sweat. His DJ residencies throughout Washington DC have included FIVE, State of the Union, Bar Nun, to name a select few. He has also has been a guest at a few Baltimore underground House Parties as the Head liner as well as different Lounges to many to mention here in DC. House Music is in his Blood and will never Die. VANNIETY KILLS: The house that dj Vanniety Kills built has become a fixture on D.C.’s DJ circuit. She’s become notorious for her after-hours house parties, daytime dances, and just about everything else in between. Professional by day, turntable manipulator by night, Vanniety Kills has an ear for music, creating DJ-booth concoctions that sound like they were born that way. But it’s her ability to read a crowd that’s elevated her from good to great. Whether it’s her ongoing house music party, House That U Built; OverEasy, her summer tea dance for the queer girl community; or Cadence, the monthly drum and bass showcase she hosts with DJ illogic, she dabbles in a little bit of everything that makes hips shake. And just as she’s avoided musical niches, she’s also managed to not be pigeonholed as a selector for just queer events. She’s more about zig-zagging between scenes and uniting them on the dance floor. —Sarah Marloff (Washington City Paper)
