Erol keeps kids dancing.
The motto is old and has been repeated almost to the point of exhaustion. But
what happens when, more than 10 years after the release of his first compilation,
we encounter a sound that has frankly reached maturity?
Kids will keep on dancing. Some have become adults. Others were already grown
up when exposed to the phenomena. Childishness was something that Erol Alkan
never accustomed us to, but it’s undeniable that he had the gift of bringing new
audiences closer to dance music and presenting it in a non-sectarian way. In
Erol’s imagination there’s space for everything, and if in the beginning he lined
up Duran Duran with Goldfrapp, in 2014 he waved a brand new “Fabric Live” as
a flag for his own style of acid Techno and Electro, brushed with pulsating synths
but not forgetting an almost song-like format that brought him together with a
broader audience. An audience he conquers as well with his scarce but always
relevant musical outings, be it on his own label Phantasy or on Boysnoize
Records. Did we mention he has collaborated with young prodigy Daniel Avery?
It never sounds extravagant to say that Erol Alkan is one of the most interesting
DJs of his generation, because that is where all clues are pointing at. Responsible
for bringing us high intensity club nights in the past, this return has left us
itching to know what tricks he’ll be pulling out of his bag. There’s only one way
to quell our anxieties – on the 20th of February, here, at Lux.
