- One of the UK’s most exciting dj and producers is coming back to Belfast. Ever since we had the opportunity to warm up for FunkinEven in The Hudson on Boxing night 2013 we have wanted to bring him back over, with his sound and style being tailor made for the low ceilings and high energy Bunatee Bar in Queen’s. In 2009 Steven Tony Julien debuted with his official ep as FuninEven on the ever-impressive Eglo Records, home to artists such as Floating Points and Belfast-based Kaidi Tatham. He quickly followed this release in 2010 with “heart proud/another space” and “she’s acid”. The success of the first ep then saw remix requests for artists such as Bonobo (Ninja Tune) and Ikonika (Hyperdub) and subsequent requests for collaborations by vocalists such as Roisin Murphy (Moloko) and Fatima. In 2011 FunkinEven set up his own Apron imprint which has seen mainly his own output but also releases from Seven Davis Jr and Greg Beato amongst others and is easily one of our favourite labels at Twitch HQ. FunkinEven also works alongside another belfast favourite Kyle Hall on their FunkinEvil project which has seen releases on Kyle Hall’s Wild Oats label. As a dj, FunkinEven enjoys himself, and his enjoyment is contagious. Regularly taking things from dark, bass-heavy house straight into upbeat vocal house with relative ease and faultless transition he keeps bodies on the dancefloor and smiles on faces.
