After leaving the pavements of Dalston fallow last year, Land of Kings announces its return on Bank Holiday Sunday 3rd May for sixteen hours of forward-leaning music, art, food and film. With a hoard of fresh faces, alongside some familiar friends, the festival presents a roster of talent that stretches the breadth of Hackney’s creative scenes, with a programme taking punters across the neighbourhood from midday through till 6am.
The festival’s live music offering sees genre-defying, electronic savant Tom Vek, performing a special, solo A/V set, alongside Border Community’s purveyor of organic techno Nathan Fake. Portico bring their new vocally-charged electronica to the fray; NZCA Lines his effusively polished blend of R&B rhythms and analogue synths; HVOB present their dark, percussive take on synth-pop, and Wyles & Simpson impress with electro-soul. Further live sets come from multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Auclair; the exotic sounding alter ego of Fanfarlo's Cathy Lucas, Orlando; low-fi punk trio Trash Kit; psych-rock four-piece Landshapes; indie-pop troupe Flyte; dark nostalgic pop siren Chloe Black, and DIY singer-songwriter Esther Joy Lane.
Young Turks’ Koreless brings an expertise that belies his years, weaving beats into an architecture of sound somewhere between velvety 2-step and ambient electronica; Boxed In bring their seductively layered melodic pop; all-female, choral powerhouse Deep Throat chime in, whilst alchemically rhythmic Mo Kolours, electronic experimentalist Hairy Hands, production whiz Ghost Culture and Sri-Lankan born sonic explorer My Panda Shall Fly join the roster. Elsewhere sees Dub pioneer/BBC 6 Music sage Don Letts, prolific US rap producer Lex Luger, Grime Karaoke, and mask-clad producer Brolin on the line-up, and forward-leaning collective Huntleys & Palmers curate a line-up of bright futures.
On the DJ front, Dalston’s basements, backrooms and banquet suites bounce to the likes of prodigal house vanguards Waze & Odyssey, clubland’s favourite party animals The 2 Bears, crate-diggers and masters of the edit Psychemagik, plus NTS resident Moxie - with her eclectic selection of techno, grime and hip-hop. Other DJs announced include Berlin disco king Capablanca, bizarre-house duo Zanzibar Chanel, queen of dark disco Lena Willikens, Balearic misfits Soft Rocks, rising beatsmith Toby Gale, Inverted Audio's Antepop, Juno's Tony Poland, and foragers of the electronic outback Public Information DJs; plus DJ sets from Thump and The Pool Agency.
An eclectic arts programme includes Death Drawing with Art Macabre, outdoor cinematic happenings by Lost Picture Show, a run of late night shorts at the Rio presented by the London Short Film Festival, lyrical folk from The Nest Collective, a multi-sensory drinking den by Increments and Looking Glass Cocktail Club in a WWII bunker, a secret TV karaoke micro-party, and a salon of discussion and debates curated by Dalston Darlings and Let's Be Brief.
