  • Soul of Sydney are a collective of dancers, DJ’s artists, musicians and designers who have come together bonded by our love for Soul and Funk based music, as well as the street culture around it. We launched as a collective and blog back in 2009 and now host a series of Sunday afternoon funk and soul based music event that started out as a renegade sound system in parks around Sydney. Frustrated with the state of music in Sydney and inspired by recent trips to New York we decided to create a secret free family friendly Sunday Soul and Funk based picnic. The idea was to set something up in a party space that is a little more personal, out of the usual bar and club environment, somewhere for people who are too old for bars and clubs and way too young to give up on music. We wanted a space where people express themselves on the dance floor and connect through the music, one where people come away as friends after the party. Taking inspiration from the DJ’s and Clubs who helped shape Disco, Hip Hop & House we knew we wanted to keep things open and give DJ’s the freedom to play anything they wanted. Inspired by the likes of Kool Herc’s Block Parties, Larry Levan & Paradise Garage, David Mancuso & The Loft in NYC we tried to set up an event where DJ would play more of their musical roots and inspirations. The kind of music you would hear them playing at their own homes, music that shaped them.
