Vanishing Point with Optimo B2B Ivan Smagghe and Wrong Island

  • For the Vanishing Point launch party on Saturday 27th June at Patterns (formerly Audio), we’re overjoyed to bring together some of our favourite DJs to play a five hour set together: Optimo and Ivan Smagghe. A Sunday night institution at Glasgow’s iconic Sub Club for 13 years, Optimo was instrumental to the city’s vibrant underground music scene. What makes Optimo’s JD Twitch and JG Wilkes stand out amongst their peers is their disregard for genres and fads. You never know quite what you’re going to hear at an Optimo night; it could be new wave one minute, then banging techno the next. But one thing for certain is that you’ll not only hear tracks that you love, but leave with a long list of ‘new favourite’ tracks. As Twitch and Wilkes themselves, say “We Love Your Ears!” This will be Optimo’s first Brighton appearance in over 10 years, which adds and extra excitement to Vanishing Point launch party. Just like his erstwhile partner-in-crime Andrew Weatherall, Ivan Smagghe has been described as “the DJ’s DJ”, with a host of key figures singing his praises, including James Murphy, Trevor Jackson and Optimo themselves. The Parisian has a gift of fusing both obscure and revered tracks spanning genres to delight the dancefloor. Ivan Smagghe’s unique production was first heard through his early releases on Kitsune, followed by the hugely popular Black Strobe, which he formed with Arnaud Rebotini, releasing such seminal electro hits as ‘Me and Madonna’. More recently his work with Tim Paris under the It’s A Fine Line name has seen him remix Superpitcher, The xx, and Metronomy; as well as releasing via his own Les Disques de la Mort (LDDLM) label. Joining Optimo and Ivan Smagghe are Vanishing Point residents, Teamy & Matthew Balaam. Teamy is resident DJ and music programmer at South Place Hotel in London, putting on parties with guest DJs including Ricardo Villalobos, Horse Meat Disco, Harri & Domenic and Skream. In Glasgow, he worked with Optimo for most of their 13 year Sunday night residency and hosted the Wrong Island night, featuring the likes of Pearson Sound, Maximillion Dunbar and LCD Soundsystem, the latter becoming such firm friends that they asked Teamy to DJ at the after-party to the last ever show, at Madison Square Gardens. Finally, as if he isn’t busy enough, Wrong Island also launched a record label in 2013 with six 12” releases to date. Matthew Balaam is our other resident, and will be bringing his deep and varied selection of music spanning the last 40 years with plenty of bangers sitting alongside out-there selections. Matthew also plays as resident at the Square Root warehouse parties in London where he has warmed up for the acts like Neville Watson, Jade Seatle, Plant43 and Mark Forshaw, and his love of 80s disco has him play on a monthly basis at the Italo-heavy Mirage club nights and radio show in Brighton. Together, these DJs will bring a party to Brighton, the likes of which is rarely experienced. We are also extremely honoured to have legendary artist Pete Fowler produce the artwork for Vanishing Point. Best known for his work with Super Furry Animals and the Monsterism toys, Pete Fowler’s eclectic and playful designs were the perfect way to present the Vanishing Point parties.
