  • While one of their Lush videopodcasts was playing in the background we sat down to have a chat with Dualism on all sorts of things. Logically then, the first question had to touch the topic of the source of avantgarde and sexy video collage accompanying their typical minimal sound on the Youtube video. "Well, we're into video busines and have our resources... but in short - it takes a lot of time, effort and research. Before Dualism emerged, we were doing different things such as working being employed in the graphic industry. Nowadays we're self-employed focusing on motion graphics and film. We mostly concentrate on motion design itself, meaning doing all the postproduction animation and stuff." With such background it's only natural, that the Swiss duo oscillate between audio and visual art with natural finesse resulting from years of experience in both fields behind their belt. How about some latest efforts? "A couple of months ago we finished a 70-minute document about an art project. We also produced the soundtrack consisting of 11 tracks which will be released soon on our babylabel Numbolic. For the documentary we did everything from camera to story, editing, postproduction, music and graphics." The soundtrack isn't what you'd probably expect from them, consisting mainly of laidback and melodic chill-out. So Dualism isn't only about techno? "As a matter of fact the entire soundtrack has not much to do with techno. We think a lot has happened in terms of our musical productions. Everything that influences us has an impact on our music! This french flic called Martyrs for example... Onur Senturk - a Turkish motion graphics artist... Some little parts of something rather boring such as a doorway (when walking across the street) or some nice colorgraded videos.. well, this kind of stuff. We also feel a lot more comfortable playing at a slower bpm these days. We're also a lot into electronica & triptec and we're also working with singers. There will be lots of different sounds from Dualism in the near future. But of course, we will continue with so-called minimal techno as well." Regarding minimal - lots of people automatically associate that word with boredom. Some say, one should be able to whistle a tune to be able to remember it so that it stays in the mind and you can recall it whenever you want... With minimalistic music it can be quite a struggle to be able to achieve this. Dualism don't really take this into consideration and take a completely different approach here: "Well... this whistling-to-a-tune-thing isn't our thing at all. Of course, it's nice when people remember your music but as mentioned - this is not our style at all. We rather want to put people into a certain mood, into a story. It's similar to a good movie of which only the mood, the athmosphere remain... it's more about the teeling that remains. We take people on a journey and that's what they will remember in the end." Talking about movies, the duo seem to be into horror flicks quite a lot (or at least one half of it), just like me, so we spent the next few minutes in the "..and do you know this one?" exchange. They previously mentioned Martyrs being their source of inspiration and after several "Yeah, seen that one as well." attempts on either side we finally both find a horror to recommend to each other. While I urge them to see Amer for it's resemblance to their own video material and its artistic approach, they recommend Tusk to me. "Kinda weird story but somewhat special.", they say. (And after seeing it I can only agree.) When two djs play together, the result is most usually a standard back-to-back set, but what about live performance? "When playing live we have to listen a lot more to each other since we both play at the same time. This is very important since we always improvise. When playing live we both have several hundred samples at disposal. Just in case we get out of sync or anything else (unwanted) is happening." And unwanted things are unavoidable as they confirm: "Yes, it happens pretty often. We once had a total crashdown playing here in Switzerland and the second time playing at a festival in Canada! Most of the times we just have to improvise and get the most out of the current situation. But certainly just keeping calm and letting nobody know that anything happened :)". Let's hope then, that nothing like that will happen on their next two gigs, which will take them to Slovakia and Czech republic the next day on 17th & 18th April!
