  • Peter Gordon - Musical Director / Saxophones, Organ Rhys Chatham / Flute Peter Zummo / Trombone Ernie Brooks / Bass Guitar Bill Ruyle / Percussion & Vibraphone Gavin Russom / Synths Max Gordon / Piano, Trumpet Gerry O’Beirne / Guitar Foom presents the first ever European performances of one of Arthur Russell's most important concert works: Instrumentals. Inspired by the nature photography of Yuko Nonomura, it has only ever been performed publicly 6 times until now. The premiere of Instrumentals took place in Berkeley, California in January 1975, and as a composition it continued to evolve and change as Russell and his ensemble performed it 4 more times in New York City over the next four years. Considered to be part of the minimalist movement of the time, it featured one of the first pairings of pop and concert hall aesthetics, and was the first exploration of its kind in the vibrant downtown New York scene. It has been described by Pitchfork as: ‘‘a masterpiece…up there with World Of Echo as Arthur Russell’s greatest achievement.’’ Peter Gordon and Arthur Russell met in New York City in 1975. Bonding over a shared love of instrumental pop music and a similar musical outlook, they soon became close friends and frequent collaborators, playing together in The Flying Hearts and the Love Of Life Orchestra and generally utilising the same musicians in their respective ensembles. As well as playing keyboards at many of the New York shows, Gordon also worked closely with Russell on the arrangement and notation of Instrumentals. Consequently, many parts of the original score are in Gordon’s handwriting. . Peter Gordon. Photo by Paula Court. Peter Gordon formed the Love Of Life Orchestra in 1977 and went on to compose and orchestrate music for theatre and film (he was one of the orchestrators on the Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind OST). He had a retrospective of his work with the Love Of Life Orchestra issued on DFA Records in 2011, released a collaboration with Factory Floor in 2013 on Optimo Music and has continued to serve as music producer on Robert Ashley’s Vidas Perfectas. His latest album with the Love Of Life Orchestra, Symphony 5 was released in February on Foom. In March 2012, almost twenty years after Arthur Russell’s death, Peter Gordon unveiled his new reading of Instrumentals at a sold-out performance in New York City’s renowned arts-centre, The Kitchen. Now in 2015, for the European performances, Instrumentals will be performed by Peter Gordon, Rhys Chatham, Peter Zummo, Ernie Brooks and Bill Ruyle (all of whom played in Arthur Russell's original Instrumentals ensembles, as well as Peter Gordon's Love Of Life Orchestra), plus Max Gordon, Gerry O'Beirne and Gavin Russom of LCD Soundsystem. Support on the headline dates comes from Foom label boss, Benjamin Freeney.
