  • A musical journey through our monumental Belgian electronic past Powered by: Age Of Love, The Sound of Belgium, Café Charlatan & Teknoville On Day 2 of Klankfest - the new 10 day party-concept in Vooruit during the Gentse Feesten – we will go on a musical journey through our monumental Belgian electronic past. The journey will be in the capable hands of Age of Love, The Sound of Belgium, Teknoville & Charlatan. One night in the late 1980s, Belgium woke up to the sound of New Beat. ‘The Sound of Belgium’ and ‘Age of Love’ have been bringing fresh attention to this extraordinary piece of Belgian dance music history that became such a worldwide sensation: the first with an extensive documentary depicting the whole music scene and movement that captured so many souls back in those days. The second by organizing parties that make people completely relive the magical days of the ‘90’s. These two legendary concepts will now bring the ultimate Belgian line-up focusing completely on the original Belgian club-vibes, from Popcorn, New Beat and House to pure 90’s trance and techno sounds, to the Vooruit. They'll be supported by Teknoville – the first program on Studio Brussels which took part in the rise of Belgian house and techno music – as well as Charlatan - the music café that can rightfully claim to be one of the highlights in Ghent’s (or even Flanders) alternative nightlife and is also the original home of Age of Love. Heading the line-up is one of Belgium’s biggest bands to date, Praga Khan. Ever since their first hits ‘Rave Alarm’ and ‘Injected with a Poison’ in the early nineties, Praga Kahn has been moving dance-floors all over the world. They even caught the eye of Hollywood and their music is featured in several box office successes such as ‘Basic Instinct’, ‘Sliver’, ‘The Spy who shagged me’ and many others. As remixers Praga Khan and his team laid their hands on the work of people as varied as Jean-Michel Jarre, White Zombie, Alice in Chains, Gravity Kills and more. After years of success abroad, Praga Khan released ‘Pragamatic’ in 1998, the album that marks the beginning of a huge following here back home. The Praga Khan live set becomes more and more renowned and twice in a row, they win TMF's "Best Live Act" award. After several theater-tours and work on side-project ‘Lords of Acid’, Praga Kahn remain relevant to the dance scene up to today with new albums and their ‘25 Years on Stage’ celebrations in 2013. But it speaks for itself that they will be bringing their biggest ‘90’s hits on this night. They will be supported by some of the leading dj’s and producers from those roaring electronic eighties and nineties. First up is Phi-Phi who sole handedly turned the Mondays nights in Extreme into some of Europe’s most popular parties of those days. Together with his studio partner Philippe Van Mullem, he also made several timeless tracks like Honey C, Stop The Disease, UNA - Emotion, Can You Hear Me, Quadran & Innertales. He remains one of the few dj’s who can still play and produce the vanished old Belgian trance style like back then. Next up is Quincy who also started his career in Extreme and later continued its success with the ‘Rebuilding Mondays’ in the legendary old Boccaccio. He is now resident for and driving force behind a lot of ‘retro’ concepts as Age of Love, Cherry Moon, Teknoville and many others. A true connoisseur of the real nineties sounds and vibes. Furthermore Sven van Hees, featured in ‘The Sound of Belgium’ as founder of the popular ‘Liasons Dangereuses’ radio show in Antwerp in 1985: the first radio-show ever to follow the birth of dance music as we know it. He also became one of the first residents in Café d’Anvers and an excellent producer for early labels as USA Import, Wonka and R&S. Now mostly a lounge producer, he will be digging into his early radio-days collections for the proper Belgian underground productions. Eric B. is also featured in ‘The Sound of Belgium’ as one of the first masters in the genre. He started his career as early as the mid 80’s as resident in big New Beat institutions as La Gaite and Boccaccio before moving onto La Rocca where he manned the decks for over 10 years. As a producer he appeared on labels as PIAS, R&S, Accor, Afrotraxx, Sony, Sekel Records, King Street Sounds, Bonzai Progressive and Nite Grooves. His knowledge of Belgium’s early glory days is as extensive as his reputation and he will surely take you back in time with the biggest classics you can remember. Mo & Benoelie dominated the Ghent scene as of 1987 as residents of the famous Fifty Five club where they played marathon sessions from 10pm till 8am every Saturday. They moved on to many popular parties including Free the Funk, Eskimo, Belmondo and Poplife. For several of these, they also mixed compilations that were an amalgamation of new beat, funk, dub, house, techno, party hip hop, new wave, edgy post-punk disco and more. They later became a world-wide phenomena as ‘The Glimmer Twins’ but to us, they will always be Mo & Benoelie. The line-up is completed by Ronnie Harmsen aka Dikke Ronny who is widely accepted as the one and only originator of New Beat when he began to spin maxi singles at 33bpm instead of the stated 45bpm. People liked the slowed down versions a lot and as such the scene was born. Influenced by this slowed down sound, musicians started making records which were spun at clubs as Boccaccio in Destelbergen and the AB in Antwerp. The tracks conquered Europe and the world, not only on the dance-floors but also in the charts. The rest is history. With a line-up that is at the heart of Belgium’s early, electronic days, we are sure to take you back in time with all those tracks and vibes that defined an era… an era we still carry in our hearts today. Join us for a magical ride into Belgium’s electronic past! And if you still like dance music today, be sure to also check the other 8 nights of Klankfest … you just may find another night (or two) to your liking…
