Klankfest Night 8 presents Democrazy & Mo'juice

  • Underground disco madness to blow your mind DEMOCRAZY presents: Mo' Juice On Day 8 of Klankfest we would like to invite all aficionados of (proto)-house, cosmic disco, afrobeat, 80’s boogie or vintage electro! As a nomadic Ghent music club, Democrazy has been offering a high quality range of pop and rock in the broadest sense since 1981. Naturally, this encompasses genres such as hip-hop, dubstep, drum ‘n’ bass, pop, alternative rock, electronic, metal, dance, funk, soul, reggae,... but for Klankfest, Democrazy will go all out for disco and who better than Mo’ Juice to help them do that. Mo’ Juice came to life last year because Mo Disko (from The Glimmers) and Nico Juice (from Juice Blenders) thought it was high time to wake up Ghent’s nightlife with a new party-concept that deviated from the norm. Mo’ Juice became a bi-monthly concept in the spirit of the former No Way Back parties on which the most adventurous dj’s of the planet come to do their unrestrained thing, going from dirty disco en dark electro to 80’s boogie and raw funk, on different and original locations. And this time, the Vooruit will be the location of choice. And who better the lead us into the night than one of New York’s disco instigators of recent times. Eric Duncan aka Dr Dunks is one half of legendary DJ duo Rub-n-Tug & also half of DFA’s Still Going. No matter the name though, the game remains unchanged: peak time party provider. Ever since coming up in his hometown of Los Angeles' freestyle and hip-hop scene in the early 80’s, Duncan has been a sound selector extraordinaire. With partner Thomas Bullock, he threw the notorious late 20th century Rub-n-Tug disco parties in downtown Manhattan, turning on a new generation of revelers to the sleazy pleasures of disco. He followed that up as the Saturday night resident of the now defunct Passerby gallery & bar, fueling the party well into Sunday mornings. Be it slo-mo disco, incandescent funk, techno or banging house music, Eric weaves it together into a nightlife soundtrack. Over the past decade, Eric has remixed everyone from Roxy Music to Zero 7, LCD Soundsystem, Cold Play, Grace Jones, !!! (Chk Chk Chk), Todd Terje and The Beastie Boys, just to name a few. He will be effortlessly be accompanied by Prins Thomas who’s responsible for a swag of eclectic ‘space-disco’ sounds emanating from his homeland, Norway. Way back in time, he started DJ-ing at a puerile age, viewing it as an extension of his break-dancing efforts. He began mixing hip hop, electro and the likes of Arthur Baker and Shep Pettibone. He then took up the bass and played in more bands than Norway has trees. He joined forces with Hans-Peter Lindstrøm in 2003 which led to releasing two albums on the Ghent-based Eskimo label. They both have backgrounds in different Norwegian band projects, ranging from punk to gospel to heavy metal to folk and psychedelia, but they also shared a passion for collecting records and run their own labels Feedelity, Full Pupp and Internasjonal. From New York over Norway, we make the international circle round with Optimo, consisting of JD Twitch & JG Wilkes who hosted the Optimo Espacio events every Sunday at the legendary Sub Club in Glasgow from 1997 to 2010 when the club came to an end. They continued to tour world-wide, promote and release music as well as bringing the party back home to Glasgow every two months. Music wise they created Optimo Music to support and expose the plethora of local talent lighting up their lives and exciting their ears, as well as those shaking things up far from their fair city. The result is an outstanding collection of diverse tracks and songs reflecting their broad taste in music as their set on this night will testify. The musical and organizational master-minds behind Mo’ Juice will obviously also take to the stage… Mo Disko aka Dirty Mind aka part of Disko Drunkards is also known as Mo from Mo & Benoelie aka The Glimmers. Notorious and revered because of his amazing choice of records (just check his Free the Funk or DJ Kicks compilations), his contributions to the Eskimo label or his live gigs with the Disko Drunkards. Or maybe you’ve seen him play somewhere before? In Ibiza? Or Fabric? Or in Australia? His latest venture is the Rheinzand project with Reinhard from Das Pop but he remains first and above all the one and only Mo Disko behind the decks. And this time, you don’t even have to travel that far to hear him play. Nico Juice and Alan Johnson started dj-ing in the mid nineties and were mainly fascinated by break-beat experiments on UK-based labels such as Mo' Wax, Ninja Tune and the like. Continuing on this path, the Juice Blenders became one of the leading figures in the early drum 'n' bass scene in Ghent. It was fun while it lasted, but eventually they got a bit bored of the prevailing purist way of thinking. By the end of the noughties the time was right to switch things around, so they decided to focus on the music they really, really love, discarding any restrictions. Instead of one-hour DJ sets, this meant playing long sets with exciting tunes from the sixties till the present, more adventurous and more surprising. Music that comes from the heart... and goes straight to the hips. The line-up is completed with Borat, the lovable man with the beard who is most entitled to the title ‘Walking Musical Encyclopedia’. He has been working in the Music Mania record shop for many, many years and was the one who tipped some of the most exciting dj’s around as Todd Terje, Lindstrom, Idjut Boys, Prins Thomas, … He was resident dj for the Brussels based Dirty Dancing nights and the Make-Up club in Ghent. A dj-gig of him has become quite a rarity lately so don’t miss this opportunity to see him at work with some of the toppers he tipped first.
