Cancelled: Rbma Présente Afrique Polyrythmique

  • Due to the devastating events in Paris on November 13, this show has been cancelled. For information about refunds, please check http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com later this week. On this special evening at the eclectic arts and cultural center La Bellevilloise, Red Bull Music Academy celebrates a range of different musical styles from Africa, showcasing artists based in various parts of the continent as well as local Parisian acts inspired by the infinitely rich and ever-expanding tradition of African music. Out of Soweto, South Africa, Nozinja will raise the BPM levels with his celebrated Shangaan electro style, which recently earned him a spot on the lauded roster of Warp Records. Okmalumkoolkat represents a different side of future-facing South African dance music entirely. His shapeshifting brand of hip hop is inspired by South African house and kwaito, but also draws on the boisterous MCing tradition of American rap pioneers like Leaders of the New School, and fits effortlessly with the London bass sounds of Hyperdub trio LV. Malian singer Nahawa Doumbia, meanwhile, has been one of her country's most popular singers since the 1980s. Her socially conscious and pristinely rendered songs have helped give a voice to the Wassoulou people – and a beautiful one at that. The lineup is rounded out by Paris-based electronic Afropop duo congopunQ, who will be joined by afrobeat master Tony Allen on drums, as well as Secousse and Dutch Academy participant Niels Broos.
