“I want to take it to the real Paris, and make the real Paris burn.” When Grandfather of Vogue Wili Ninja uttered those words in the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning, the general public’s introduction to ball culture, he didn’t know his community and influence would eventually spread worldwide and inspire successive generations of LGBT youth. Voguing represents an element of LGBT subculture that is fiercely competitive while offering opportunities for community and inclusion within a historically marginalized culture. However, voguing was a relatively unknown entity in France until Lasseindra Ninja hosted Paris’ first ball in 2012. Born in the South of France, raised in Guyana, and baptized in ball culture in New York, Lasseindra remains the undisputed queen of French vogue even as it’s spread across the city. Tonight, we celebrate the vitality of Paris’ voguing scene at Folie’s Pigalle, hosted by Lasseindra and featuring Ballroom Beatz creator Vjuan Allure, Sound Pellegrino label boss Teki Latex, Rinse France DJ and House of Mizrahi affiliate Betty, rapper Kiddy Smile and ClekClekBoom co-founder The Boo.
