Following their AIM Independent Music Award for best small label, Erased Tapes return to VU to present Brooklyn-based acoustic ensemble Dawn of Midi. The trio comprising Aakaash Israni from India on double bass, Amino Belyamani from Morocco on piano and Qasim Naqvi from Pakistan on drums to support their new release Dysnomia. For their new album, Dawn of Midi abandon jazz improvisation in favour of composition, utilising sophisticated rhythmic structures from North and West African folk traditions to weave a sonic tapestry of trance-inducing grooves.
Having supported Nils Frahm, Kiasmos and Convergence Rival Consoles (Ryan Lee West) returns to Village Underground to mark the release of his third album Howl (out 16th October). The album explores a wide range of emotions; from the dissonance eruptions and primal rhythms in the title track, to the mournful improvisations of 3 Laments, which features a sample of his own voice. Alongside his performances on Moog, Prophet, tape delay and guitar, West enlisted the help of drummer Fabian Prynn for Low and cellist Peter Gregson for ‘Walls’, both long-time collaborators of Erased Tapes peers Michael Price and Douglas Dare.
The son of a piano teacher, Douglas Dare released his first EP Seven Hours in September 2013 on the Erased Tapes label. After an extensive European tour with fellow Erased Tapes artist, Ólafur Arnalds, Douglas began recording his debut album, Whelm with his drummer/producer Fabian Prynn, before embarking on his first North American tour with label mate Nils Frahm in early 2014. His live sound combines acoustic instrumentation including piano and percussion with glitchy electronic elements. Inspired by the likes of Portishead, Elliot Smith and James Blake, Douglas combines a rich and haunting vocal with lyrics crafted from his own poems and short prose.
