For those that may not be familiar with City Fly we have been putting on regular parties in Leicester and further afield for over 10 years now and we're considered to be a 'key part of the scene' which 'has spawned a record label championing the best in house music'. We've put on a monthly showcase at Leicester's best independent underground venue Sophbeck for over 5 years now bringing our record label artists from as far a Tokyo, Melbourne & Moscow to Leicester to showcase the sounds we love.
After a great summer of showcasing our residents we move into Autumn & Winter and things really start to hot up as we introduce our first guest's of the season…
THATMANMONKZ (Delusions of Grandeur / Shadeleaf Music)
2014 was a big year for Scott Moncrieff AKA thatmanmonkz. Not only did his own label Shadeleaf become firmly established, he also dropped brilliantly received releases on both Kolour LTD and D.O.G, and went on to be named as the 45th best artist of the year at Traxsource.
‘monkz manages to tread that fine line of simultaneously picking up props from all angles and wrecking dancefloors the world over whilst remaining resolutely underground and focused on the more interesting corners of dance music, so much so that RA have rightly stated that ‘Despite the pivotal part his hometown has played in electronic music history, you can’t shake the feeling that if this were the work of some auteur from Detroit, Thatmanmonkz would receive much wider recognition from the house community.’
With remixes aplenty, and solo releases out now via D.O.G and Classic, much more from Shadeleaf, and an album due later in the year, ’15 looks like it will be an even bigger one for this Steel City resident.
TrueSelf (Atjazz Record Company)
TrueSelf started playing guitar at the age of seven, and ventured in and out of bands throughout his teens. He took on A-Level Music Tech at seventeen, and was introduced massively to electronic music; his three favourite labels soon became Warp Records, Tru Thoughts and Ninja Tunes. It was at this point he took up DJing and producing in his spare time.
Playing as ‘FooJay’, he ran and played nights with many of the industries biggest names, at venues such as Back to Basics at Stinky's Peephouse, Stealth, The Custard Factory, Ministry of Sound, Mint Club, MixMag Tour Party...
Although he has an eternal passion for Deep/Soulful House music, he never constrains himself whilst producing. He is now honing in on what inspires him most in the studio; a mixture of Deep Electronic/Organic sounds. Whether it be recording soulful guitar licks or old analogue synths, he aims to portray emotion and soul.
2010 saw the release of ‘Summer Vision’, a collaboration between TrueSelf and Si Tew on M8MC Music. A feel good Hip Hop, soulful summer beat, it allowed the two producers to showcase their unique sounds. TrueSelf’s first solo single and remix, is out now on the legendary Atjazz Record Company. You can also catch him playing guitar in Si Tews band which, if you haven't experienced before, then we highly recommend that you do. Electronica meets Soul meets Hip Hop and everything in between. Nice.
