Arthur Russell’s Instrumentals sound as gorgeously crisp, playful and unhurried as in their first performance over 40 years ago. Such is the genius of the late Arthur Russell, beloved Iowa-born musical polymath and downtown New York City icon whose life’s work has informed such dynamos as David Byrne, James Murphy and Sufjan Stevens.
Inspired by the nature photography of his Buddhist teacher Yuko Nonomura, Instrumentals broke new ground in minimalism by pairing concert hall aesthetics with pop; the reissued recorded version, First Thought, Best Thought, was heralded as a masterpiece by Pitchfork.
Remarkably, this restaging of the original 1975 concert features the same core ensemble – including long-term collaborators Peter Gordon and Ernie Brooks, plus the composer Rhys Chatham.
A wonderful chance to catch up with the work of a true luminary.
