Più noto al mondo come Scuba, il dissidente della techno, Paul Rose e la sua etichetta Hotflush dal 2003 sono in gran parte responsabili dello spostamento dell'elettronica verso uno scenario musicale colmo di bassi. Come DJ e produttore i successi personali di Rose lo portano nel firmamento dei luminari dell'elettronica UK, con la produzione di quattro album, un mix per la serie DJ Kicks, una residenza al Berghain e un riconoscimento come Best Live Act conferito da DJ Mag nel 2013. Musicalmente contraddittorio, Scuba rifiuta volutamente le correnti della musica dance, cambiando direzione quando lo desidera. Dopo l'album di debutto del 2008, intitolato malinconicamente A Mutual Antipathy, lancia Triangulation nel 2010, un'opera vastamente apprezzata e ricca di ombre e intrecci di generi elettronici. Presto seguono le escursioni profonde di ritmi a 4/4 con lo pseudonimo SCB e quasi dal nulla l'EP Adrenalin nel 2011, che a sua volta apre la strada all'album successivo, Personality, un giubilante omaggio alla house anni 90. Il 2014 porta cambiamenti nella musica di Scuba, con la serie di EP Phenix: un vibe più oscuro e introspettivo, che unisce le dinamiche del dancefloor ad atmosfere solenni e vocalizzi spettrali. Con il nuovo album Claustrophobia nel 2015, le fondamenta sono di certo fissate per il futuro. Grazie anche a notevoli produzioni per Recondite e Locked Groove, per Rose e la Hotflush sembra essere un futuro eccitante e, come sempre, inaspettato. Dopo la sua performance come headliner al Dancity Festival 2011 e al Serendipity nel marzo 2013, torna ad accendere il dancefloor del Serendipity.
Since 2003, Paul Rose – better known to the world as techno maverick Scuba – and his Hotflush imprint have shaped the direction of the electronic scene’s bass-heavy landscape more than most.
As a DJ and producer, meanwhile, Rose’s personal achievements have seen him ascend to rank among the UK’s electronic luminaries. He has released four artist albums, spun a mix for the esteemed DJ Kicks series, run a night at Berghain, and won a DJ Mag Best Live Act award in 2013. A musical contrarian, Scuba has deliberately pushed against dance music currents, changing course when it suits him. After the melancholic statement that comprised his 2008 debut A Mutual Apathy, he released 2010’s Triangulation, a widely acclaimed opus steeped in shadowy cross-genre electronics. That was swiftly followed by excursions into deep 4/4 rhythms under the pseudonym SCB and then, almost out of nowhere, the release of 2011’s Adrenalin EP which paved the way for the following year’s jubilant 90’s house-inflected Personality album. Moving forward, 2014 heralded a fresh musical approach for Scuba: the Phenix series of EPs were the first sign of that: a darker, more introspective musical direction melding dancefloor dynamics with brooding atmospheres and spectral vocals. With the new album Claustrophobia out in 2015, those foundations look sure to be cemented in the months ahead, and with notable releases for Recondite and Locked Groove, the future for Rose and the Hotflush imprint looks as diverse and exciting as always. After his performance as headliner at Dancity Festival 2011 and at Serendipity on March 2013, he'll come back to explode club's dancefloor.
