OPTIMO (Twitch & Wilkes) Glasgow SUB BASS SNARL (Live - Reunion Set) DEEPCHILD (Berlin) DJ Set STEREOGAMOUS SIMON CALDWELL (Mad Racket) JIMI POLAR PREACHA JEREMY BAKER MAYBE D (D&D/HAHA Inds.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ First release $20 - On sale now Second release $30 General Admission $40 OPTIMO Optimo is DJ duo Twitch and Jonnie Wilkes, whose legendary Optimo night in Glasgow (and around the world) mixes up techno, electro, rock and other assorted records out of leftfield. Optimo started in 1997, though Twitch and Jonnie Wilkes had each been DJing separately for ten years. Both had started out playing different music - Twitch - electro, noisy rock and the eighties New York punk funk of Liquid Liquid (from who they borrowed their name) and Wilkes reggae, funk and jazz. Then techno came along and Twitch co founded Scotland's first techno club, Pure, which ran for ten years, became legendary, was the first club in Europe to book Jeff Mills, Green Velvet and Richie Hawtin. The club also spawned thee labels which released music from amongst others Coil, Chris and Cosey, Jimi Tenor and Orlando Voorn. In 1997 they founded the clubnight Optimo as a reaction to 4/4 techno all night long. Anything goes was the philosophy and the club night proved to be a hit. "I didn't care whether it would work or not, or whether anyone would go, it was just something I had to do," says Twitch. "I love DJing with all my heart but at this point I was so bored with seamless mixing - it was all just too obvious, too predictable and too easy - that I had to do something to preserve my (in)sanity." Don't expect easy club hits at a night at Optimo, depending on the duo's mood, the sound will veer from sleazy funk to post punk, electro, 50's swing and anything inbetween. SUB BASS SNARL Starting out in 1991 at the onset of rave in Sydney, Sub Bass Snarl was pioneering a “decks’n’effects” setup from the beginning. Relinquishing vinyl and using CDs as early as 1992, Sub Bass Snarl evolved into a diverse and dynamic outfit combining DJ skills with live sampling, editing, and added synths. From playing skull crushing acid techno under the stars at the legendary Vibe Tribe free parties in Sydney Park to their ambient dub picnics called Cryogenesis on the islands of the harbour in the early 90s they moved into jungle and drum & bass in the mid-90s – pushing at the edges of d&b. During this period they also experimented with trip hop and slowed breakbeats, collaborating with many in the emerging Sydney hip hop scene helped by the proximity of their weekly radio show, The Paradigm Shift, on 2SER to the hip hop show, the Mothership Connection. They played blistering sets at many Big Day Outs and also Vibes on a Summer’s Day and were, between 1993 and 1997 playing almost every week at one underground event or another, from grimy warehouses and clubs to fluorescent bush parties. They co-curated the Freaky Loops events for 2SER and in 1996 established their weekly club night, Frigid starting at Kinselas then moving to the Dendy, Globe Newtown, the Hopetown and finally the Newtown RSL over the next ten years. During this time their sound moved through many phases – exploring IDM, glitch, microhouse, and working with video artists – especially VJ Superlight. They became known in other circles for their live remixes of film soundtracks – notably John Carpenter’s The Thing and also a mindblowing reworking of The Running Man at a gig at the Metro. By the early 2000s they started to experiment with the formative proto-dubstep sounds, introducing them to many people in Sydney before becoming a regular fixture at the more interesting bass parties of the last few years. Over the years they’ve played with many of the big names of the underground scenes - Meat Beat Manifesto, Squarepusher, Luke Vibert, Surgeon, Jan Jelinek, Anticon, Sutekh, Cylob, Mike Dred, Neotropic, Manitoba/Caribou, dj/Rupture, Prefuse73, Clark, The Bug, Ikonika, Shackleton, and many many more. Their sets have always been known for their eclecticism and have always balanced the needs of the dancefloor with a desire to push the boundaries and introduce new sounds and styles. DEEPCHILD From tough-minded house and techno to cavernous, dub-inflected post-bass excursions, Deepchild has earned a reputation as a groundbreaking producer, respected DJ and electrifying live performer.
