Industry of Machines presents: Todd Sines, Patricia & Josef Gaard

  • Industry of Machines presents: Todd Sines LIVE (Rawax | Moto Music || Ohio/NYC) Patricia LIVE (Opal Tapes | L.I.E.S. || NYC) Josef Gaard (Seattle) LA01 (Exit System || Brooklyn) Coming off of a great October edition with distinguished Baltimore guests and some amazing stuff from Talker and Karl Meier, IofM returns with a diverse bill featuring an underground legend and sympathetic upcoming names. Todd Sines tops the bill, a very-established name in US house and techno who has been active since the late '80s. We're also pleased to present the IofM solo debut of Patricia and Josef Gaard, two contemporary artists of rising renown who we've had our eyes on for some time. DJ support this time around comes from LA01 of Exit System, a longtime friend and another DJ whose rare ear has impressed us for some time. One of the first generation of American minimalist techno innovators and one of the very few not from Detroit, Todd Sines assured his status as a legitimate underground legend with releases on Peacefrog Records and Dan Bell's 7th City imprint. He remained active throughout the '90s and into the 2000s with well-received material on Midwestern labels, popping up on close friend Tintonton Duvante's Residual Recordings and later on Carl Craig's Planet E Communications as his music gradually drifted closer to house over time. Many of his '90s releases as .xtrak, Cron or Enhanced remain highly-valued collectors' items, indicative of their time, subtly ahead of it, and placed in good company alongside Midwest peers like Jay Ahern and John Tejada. Riding the collapse of the American techno scene into the mid-2000s, Sines continued to release on respected labels well after many of his compatriots fell silent. Now returning with renewed vigour both solo and with his industrial/post punk band Interval, Todd is no stranger to New York stages or even to Bossa Nova Civic Club, but he makes a rare solo live PA appearance for IofM for this night. Patricia is the main solo project of prolific Brooklyn producer Max Ravitz, a prominent artist in the L.I.E.S. continuum with a pair of album releases for Opal Tapes and an increasing body of collaborative work: Taxes (with NGLY), Pulpo (with Bookworms), Inhalants (with Jahiliyya Fields), DSR.MR (with Cloudface) and others. Initially emerging with a sound that arrived closer to the hazy house of Terekke, with added acid elements, over time Patricia has difted into harder, darker territory in parallel with many artists on L.I.E.S. He previously made a deranged appearance for IofM alongside Jahiliyya Fields in the earliest days of the Inhalants project (set to release an album soon), but it took a long time for us to get the chance to book him as a solo artist, so we're pleased to present Patricia's solo debut for IofM, live PA as always and with an all-new set. An upcoming artist from Seattle with associations to the Blankstairs label and the Secondnature promotions crew, Josef Gaard is an emerging name in American techno whose dense, abstract sound finds close parallels in the work of Northern Electronics and other psychedelic dancefloor music emanating from EU more than from his home country. Seattle is a city with a fairly rich history in electronic music as home to Decibel Festival and a long-running underground scene that stretches back well over a decade, perfect germination ground for music that outstrips most of other locales in the country for depth and development. We were suitably impressed with his Blankstairs EP and with Secondnature's recent bookings that an IofM appearance has been in order for some months, so we welcome Josef Gaard for an East Coast debut with high expectations. Rounding out the bill is Exit System resident LA01, the new moniker of Michael Overton. A fixture in the Bushwick and Bossa Nova scene but one whose pointed tastes in techno and other music set him apart, we've had the chance to hear him play a few times and to comb through his record collection, with pleasing results each time. An appearance for IofM was something of an inevitability, but given the kind of cultivated sounds on deck for this event, his appearance comes well timed and in finest company.
