Before becoming a mainstay of the influential NYC Nu-Disco Label DFA, Juan Maclean was a member of Sub Pop’s Six Finger Satellite. Switching gears between grunge to post-punk and Krautrock, they lasted for a few years before calling it quits. Legend has it that Juan then moved to New Hampshire to pursue teaching english. Meanwhile, his good friends James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy set up shop in New York and began assembling their new label named after James’ PA system ‘Death From Above.’ When Murphy begged Mr. Maclean to make a move back into music, he couldn’t resist and thus became The Juan Maclean. Armed with an arsenal of disco gear and killer vocals from Nancy Whang he soon wrote such hits as “Happy House” and “Feel So Good,” not to mention remixes for Air, Chromeo, and Chicken Lips.
