- After Christmas, we will be returning to Leeds and to our home at The Beaver Works for what will be a real milestone party for Flux. It's been 5 years since we first started throwing parties, kicking things off with a small charity event down at The Wire. Fast forward to today and we never would have dreamed of all the amazing artists we would book and places we would play. Our thanks go out to all of you for making this all possible! For our 5th Birthday party, we've not held back on the lineup front. Joining us in the basement will be a man who needs no introduction - the legendary Erol Alkan! He will be supported by the supremely talented Ghost Culture, who this year released his acclaimed debut album on Erol's Phantasy label. In the Red Room, Chicago's finest selector Mike Dunn will be joining us on a rare UK tour for what will be his Leeds debut. In the Warehouse, we are proud to welcome back our resident Dan Shake for an extended set. HEADLINERS // Erol Alkan has lived many different guises so far; DJ, remixer, label founder, club promoter, radio host, and each with great success. Playing records comes easy to Erol, having spent the past two decades at it wherever possible, from a beginning sneaking out of his bedroom to fend off brutish American rock purists while spinning British indie records in small West End nightclubs, to his current club sets that explore the bleeding edge of underground, off-kilter house, techno and disco, albeit to a somewhat more enthusiastic audience. Meanwhile, through his label Phantasy, Alkan’s singular creative vision has gradually borne the most satisfying fruit in the music of others. Beginning as little more than a singles club for friends in 2007, it has since released music from the likes of Daniel Avery, Connan Mockasin, Ghost Culture, Babe Terror and Tom Rowlands of the Chemical Brothers, as well as Erol himself. Thinking outside of the perspective of a label head, Phantasy, entrenched in Alkan’s home city of London, is seen as a collaborative community effort by it’s founder. For all of his love of collaboration and nurturing new talent, Alkan is still more than at home alone behind the decks in a club near you, professing to be as excited about DJing as ever before. Its on the radio where Alkan has found his most recent home, as a regular among the rotating cast of 6Mix residents on BBC Radio 6Music, besides the legendary likes of Andrew Weatherall, Jamie XX and Derrick May. Each 6Mix accounts for a broad span of music, both for and beyond the dark, sweaty dance floors he still adores. Before long, it will be a decade since Erol Alkan shuttered his still dearly missed weekly London club night, Trash, at the peak of it’s popularity. But with it’s communal spirit still living on and evolving through Phantasy, and with a production and DJ schedule that’s as busy as ever, what’s the next objective for a man so determined simply to follow the instincts that have served him so well. “I want to make great records, or be part of great records”, explains Alkan succinctly. “I cannot play music I do not believe in, and I don’t want to be someone I’m not.” Having begun several years ago as a quietly ambitious if limited bedroom project, the music of Ghost Culture began as a response to his own limitations of equipment and time. Assisted by co-producer Erol Alkan's guiding hand at his Phantasy studio, the pair further coaxed out the emotional and sonic layers of the initial productions, without losing any of the immediacy and freedom of his vision. An unusual alliance between the sound of contemporary underground techno and the truly individual styles of the likes of Arthur Russell and Elliot Smith, Ghost Culture's sound continues to coax listeners into an intimate space of his own. Away from Phantasy, Ghost Culture himself has been unafraid to work his charm on fellow experimental pop contemporaries, remixing acts such as Django Django and Ghostpoet in distinctive fashion. Such is the depth of the his debut album, it would take six musicians playing the same vintage synth to replicate the album exactly. Instead, and without compromising the intimacy and versatility of the original recordings, Greenwood has now reinvented the LP for the gig and festival circuit. After a year on the circuit, Greenwood feels the show has reached “a point of transition”, and will be unveiling a fresh version of the show during his headline gig at London's Corsica Studios on September 23rd. As Greenwood continues to explore and rework his material and develop his separate DJ set, any attendees will be privileged to witness his spectral, delicate but pulsating music. Chicago house producer Mike Dunn, has been DJing and producing music for over twenty years. Hailing from Englewood in Chicago, he grew up listening to his parents record collection, before falling in love with soul, funk, disco and later house and hip hop. Mike Dunn started out DJing at the block parties that took place in and around Englewood in Chicago, playing disco, funk, soul and prototype Chicago house tracks. Word soon spread about his talents and Mike started to get booked for various clubs in and around Chicago, DJ’ing with house music innovators such as Ron Hardy, Larry Heard and good friend Armando Gallop.. It wasn't long before he Mike got the production bug, resulting in his first release in 1987, “Dance You Mutha” on Westbrook Records, he also started to produce and engineer for other Chicago artists, such as Armando, Fast Eddie and K-Alexi Shelby. He continued to produce and release throughout the 1990s, with releases on labels such as Nervous, Nitestuff and Tribal America. More recently tracks like Phreaky MF’ on French label Robsoul and ’God Made Me Phunky’, re-released on Defected records, have raised his profile and delivered his music to new audiences. Whilst new interest in Mike’s original old school jamz have taken him to work with the new generation of house and techno producers and labels, demonstrated on tracks such as ‘It’s the Music’ produced by Murphy Jaxx and more recently ‘Touch the Sky’ produced by Alden Tyrell and released on Clone’s Jack for Daze imprint.
