Ovation invites Ten Thousand Yen to The Pickle Factory on 27th February for an intimate label showcase.
Since its inception in 2010, Ten Thousand Yen has quickly become one of the UK’s most respected sources of raw, eclectic electronic music. Spanning UK funky, bass and garage, along with less esoteric 4/4 rhythms, Doc Daneeka’s label has been behind classic EPs from the likes of xxxy, Seven Davis Jnr and Julio Bashmore.
Headlining for Ten Thousand Yen on 27th February is Rupert Taylor aka xxxy. Taylor’s blend of classic house, garage rhythms and dub-inflected basslines was first heard on releases for Formant and Mindset. Yet it was his You Always Start It EP on Ten Thousand Yen which announced him on the global stage, and since then, his relationship with the label has been fruitful, releasing twice more on TTY over the following years. As a DJ, Taylor is widely regarded as one of the UK’s finest, a truly eclectic selector who joins the dots between house, techno and bass music.
He’s joined by Ten Thousand Yen founder Doc Daneeka. As chief curator for the label, Mial Watkins is one of the most respected A&R figures in the house and techno community. His own releases for TTY, though sporadic, are often the most nuanced and memorable of the label’s back catalogue. Earl Jeffers is also locked in for the TTY crew. His recent remix of Doc Daneeka’s What’s It Gonna Be? has been getting plays from the likes of Annie Mac and B Traits, and has proven his aptitude for upfront, party-ready house music. General Ludd rounds out the lineup, bringing their brand of rough and tough 4/4 rhythms to The Pickle Factory. Described as African drums meets techno, their remix of Owiny Sigoma Band remains one of our favourites of 2016.
