Oval Space and The Pickle Factory welcome four house and techno icons for a special double venue event on 19th February, curated by Oval Space regular Radio Slave.
Berghain resident, Hard Wax alumni, Berlin techno monolith: Marcel Dettmann is a legendary figure in modern electronic music, famed for long sets, a purist approach, and a style of techno that blends Basic Channel minimalism with a more melodic Detroit sensibility. Weaned on Berlin institutions E-Werk and Tresor, Marcel trod the time honoured path of a German techno prodigy - working for Ostgut, then Hardwax - before taking on a Berghain residency in 2004. Dettmann is no slouch as a producer either, releasing for the likes of 50WEAPONS and The Corner, along with Ostgut Ton.
He will be joined by the founding father of French techno, Laurent Garnier. Having cut his teeth at the Hacienda during the 1980s, Garnier’s acclaimed career has seen him take up DJ residencies in Manchester, New York and Paris; release a series of records for F Communications that have passed into dance music myth; as well as launch a global radio station, compose music for ballets and film soundtracks, and even author a book. Quite simply, Laurent Garnier is not just a DJ. He’s an electronic music icon, a French cultural touchstone, and a deeply treasured part of recent techno history.
Oval Space regular Radio Slave rounds out the bill in Oval Space. Matt Edwards has joined us in Bethnal Green five times before, but 19th February will mark the first time he has curated a lineup at Oval Space. The Rekids boss is rightly regarded as one of the UK’s finest selectors, whose enviable record collection spans everything from obscure house to classic Detroit techno, and everything in between.
Meanwhile, Nick Höppner, one of the founders of Ostgut Ton, will take The Pickle Factory reins for an extended DJ session. Nick is one of Berghain’s most respected residents, equally capable of doling out tough hypnotic techno, and rich, elegant house music. His debut LP Folk, released last year to warm critical reviews, proved Nick’s mastery of all modern dance music disciplines. Support will be expertly lent by Kenny White, a key resident of London’s seminal vinyl shop Phonica Records.
