Industry Of Machines presents Area, Nicuri, JM de Frias with Special Guest Donny Burlin

  • Industry of Machines presents: A birthday celebration for Donnie Burlin In memoriam Daniel McNeil Area, aka m50 (Kimochi Sound | Sequencias || Chicago) Nicuri (Sound Theories || NJ) JM de Frias (Sequencias || NYC) Special Guest Donny Burlin (Defective | Space is the Place || Brooklyn) After a night memorable for both musical and more somber reasons at Good Room on 2 January with 2AMFM, Charles Manier, Mono Junk, Cantu, and Further Reductions, Industry of Machines reconvenes at Bossa Nova Civic Club with an emotionally-charged lineup of stellar deep house from Chicago's Area, upcoming NJ producer Nicuri, and our always-welcome guest JM de Frias. Celebrating the birthday of Donny Burlin, an important figure both in Brooklyn and Baltimore, and in memoriam of our late friend Daniel McNeil, we paint the evening in rich hues, earth tones and those colors occupying the more evocative end of the spectrum. Area is a very established and quietly legendary producer from Chicago who has heads his own difficult-to-pigeonhole Kimochi Sound imprint. Under his DJ name m50, he has toured the world, with significant associations at Deep Space, SmartBar, and his own long-running show on WNUR, which features illustrious guests and locals alike and takes in a range of music: ambient, disco, funk, hip-hop, house and techno, and wilder sounds. Area has been featured on dependably excellent sources for ambient-leaning house like AntonZap's Ethereal Sound, Francois K's Wave Music, the FreeRotation-associated UntilMyHeartStops, and New York's Sequencias. We say ambient with a caveat, for Area's sound is far from toothless: deep and searching but with grit and drive, his interest in the nastier offshoots of dance music birthed in his native Chicago and his roots in funk and hip-hop show through in his large amassed catalogue. His last New York appearance was in 2013 and for his return he's promised a harder set heavy on originals to fit with the IofM vibe; respecting the artist, we intend to let him do his thing and take everyone on an unusual journey for a special occasion. Releasing his first tracks on a series of compilations on DJ QU's Strength Music Recordings dating back to 2008, we were early on impressed by Nicuri's sound. His first solo 12-inch came in 2012 on London's Bliq label, arriving in solid company alongside artists like Nick Lapien and Exos, but things really shifted into high gear in 2014 with the launch of his own Sound Theories imprint and a series of drops on small labels - Yygrec, GROWIN MUSIC, and Mora Music - that effectively launched his career as a force to be reckoned with. Like fellow NJ producers Joey Anderson and Qu, Nicuri's sound is impressively deep with rhythmic heft and texture, abstracted and dubbed-out in a way that updates the collision of Basic Channel and tribal house that defines mid-'90s New York. We happily welcome Nicuri back for his second Bossa Nova date, where he and JM de Frias will be trading records and ideas over the night both separately and back-to-back. JM de Frias is a regular guest at Industry of Machines who importantly initiated our relationship with perennial IofM favorite D'Marc Cantu and has delivered impressive sets on all of the occasions we've hosted him. His Sequencias label, while modest in scope, stands out for some of the most consistently high-quality house to emerge from New York since its 2011 launch, featuring music from Cantu, Traxx, Hieroglyphic Being, Lapien, Willie Burns, and most recently Area, in a drop characteristically immune to trend-following. We're firmly convinced de Frias ranks amongst the best of Brooklyn's emerging young crop of DJs, so we welcome him back to set the night off solo before Nicuri joins the fray. A storied DJ from originally from Baltimore who has seen a resurgence in his career recently after achieving local notoriety as the host of some now-legendary parties in the past few years, Donny Burlin's long history goes back to the Defective label, legendary raves and residencies in Baltimore, and the previous generations of East Coast dance music. Donny is celebrating his birthday this evening and will be playing some early house vibes as well as being a guest of honor for the night.
