• Lots of clubnights takes risks, but few take risks that actually pay off, and even fewer do it with quite the same aplomb as Go!Zilla. James Priestley and Terry Hart’s regular party at Cargo in Shoreditch has become the go-to event for people seeking a spread of adventurous and varied music which provides something above and beyond the conventional club experience while still packing a serious dancefloor punch. For their first party of 2009, Go!Zilla have called in a troupe of veritable legends in the shape of The Sunburst Band. Founded back in 1997 by veteran DJ Joey Negro, and describing themselves as “unashamedly musical”, The Sunburst Band provided a colourful, riotous contrast to the bland, conservative dance music that was dominating the mainstream at the time – indeed, their name couldn’t have been more apt. Rooted in heavy, groove-based funk, boogie and disco, theirs is a sound that nods to the underground but is hugely accessible, and the most appropriate word to describe their live show is big. Thanks to artists like Dam-Funk and Metro Area, the ears of modern music-lovers are freshly attuned to the buoyant sounds of boogie, and The Sunburst Band are more relevant than ever. Sunburst’s set will be followed by a rare UK live set from Swiss deep house innovator Agnes. 2003 Agnes launched the acclaimed Sthlmaudio label, and has forged a formidable reputation thanks to his own sterling, seductive productions and remixes for the likes of Sebo-K and Ripperton. The perfect compliment to The Sunburst Band’s exuberance and extravagance, Agnes knows how to work a crowd and his appearance represents Go!Zilla’s commitment to showcasing the very best contemporary dance music has to offer. The above will be joined by special guest DJ Benji B and resident James Priestley. Benji is synonymous with Gilles Peterson’s long-running and ever-popular Worldwide show, which he produced and helped steer it on its journey from Kiss FM to BBC Radio 1. For the past six years Benji has helmed his own show on BBC 1Extra, dedicated to what he describes as “underground soul” music of all kinds – broken beat, hip-hop, garage, techno, house. This month he follows in the footsteps of Ron Trent and Jerome Sydenham when he teams up with Glenn Underground for a double mix CD on the revered Need2Soul label. James Priestley is one half of the award-winning secretsundaze crew. Having completed yet another hugely successful summer party season, he and his co-pilot Giles Smith have released the acclaimed secretsundaze vol. 2 mix CD – a reflection of their tastes in the deeper end of the house, disco and techno pool. With this January instalment promising to combine cutting edge electronic sounds with timeless soul power, 2009 is on its way to becoming a vintage year for Go!Zilla – whatever you do, don’t get left behind.
