Industry of Machines presents: Israel Vines, Shawn O'sullivan, Pure Matrix, Aphreaq

  • Industry of Machines presents: Israel Vines HYBRID LIVE/DJ (Eye Teeth | Horizontal Ground || LA) Shawn O'Sullivan (Avian | L.I.E.S. || Brooklyn) Pure Matrix LIVE (L.I.E.S. || Brooklyn) Aphreaq LIVE (Vague Output || Baltimore) Industry of Machines is pleased to announce our second collaboration with Baltimore's Vague Output crew, appearing alongside a short list of Brooklyn and America's most forward-looking techno talent. Israel Vines tops the bill, a not-exactly-new name in techno whose recent appearances on Horizontal Ground and Interdimensional Transmissions sublabel Eye Teeth have turned heads worldwide. Shawn O'Sullivan continues a winning streak of appearances for IofM with a special opening slot to prime the night in darkest shades. They are joined by live sets from Pure Matrix, a rising Brooklyn talent who has appeared on L.I.E.S., and Baltimore's Aphreaq, founder of the Vague Output crew, making his NYC debut under his Aphreaq project name. We're bringing techno back full force to Bossa Nova Civic Club with a biting February lineup, one that should heat the coldest blood. Israel Vines has been working on the puristic side of American techno for over two decades as a DJ, originally hailing from Detroit but now based in LA. He bravely entered the label and production fray in 2010 with the launch of his own Borrowed Language imprint, which ran until 2012 and earned him early accolades as well as a solo release on the similarly short-lived Cult Figures imprint. His music was ahead of the time for American techno, a dense intersection of breakbeats, Downwards-leaning hardness, and thick ambience that began catching on slightly later, in time for the 2014 drops on Horizontal Ground (as KGIV) and Semantica, and leading into his Eye Teeth solo EP in 2015, which reached worldwide notice on the new Interdimensional Transmissions sublabel. Riding on another forthcoming Eye Teeth & the equally highly-rated remix EP, featuring Talker, Silent Servant, and BMG, as well as gigs at the closing of the Great American Techno Festival and more recently, SURFACE TENSION and others, Vines has finally found deserved recognition. Not his first time in NYC but one timed to solidify these gains, Israel Vines will be bringing his new hybrid live/DJ set to bear on Bossa Nova for this night. We don't really have to introduce Shawn O'Sullivan after being a featured guest at so many IofM events, especially recently, but we were happy to honor his request to open this night in fine style for Israel Vines. Shawn has a long history as a member of LED ER EST, Further Reductions (w/Rose E. Kross), Civil Duty (w/ Beau Wanzer), solo as Vapauteen on LIES Records News, 400PPM on Avian, and as himself on WT Records and other illustrious places. His DJ history goes back to his days in the Midwest rave scene, something that shows in his sets, and he is known locally for representing the style of hard, aggressive techno now in vogue long before the vogue started, as demonstrated on recent mixes for Secret Thirteen, Reaktor Events, and elsewhere. For an occasion, if we needed one, Shawn is celebrating the release of a new Avian EP, and we wanted to get one more dose in before he goes back to Europe in spring for further progress after the past year. Running hot on a single EP for L.I.E.S., there's less to say about Pure Matrix so far, but what we've heard already shows a bright future for a new talent. Although he has a similar noise background to other recent upstarts in the Brooklyn scene, we find his work immediately more convincing & better grounded in the history of techno, comparable to the best of his peers who have emerged in recent years. Industry of Machines was quite pleased to have him play very early on, well before his L.I.E.S. EP and also before his ideas were as fully formed as they obviously are now. After sharing stages with Vatican Shadow, Dual Action, and others in recent months, we feel he's ready to stand his ground besides two world-class techno producers and DJs, so we welcome him back for a second live set. Aphreaq has been moving through the mid atlantic underground in various guises for well over 10 years. Bridging hypnotic and dub techno with roots in industrial, EBM, and rhythmic noise, his more experimenal and industrial aesthetics has landed him releases with EDEC and Make Mistakes. The founder of Vague Output, he continues to refine an experimental and hypnotic aesthetic, and he shines in the raw energies shaped in the moment of his improvisational livesets. Never idle and never satisfied, he is now exploring his background in rhythmic noise and raw EBM with his new project Constants, who recently debuted at Nothing Changes.
