Ovation hosts a truly special evening of electronic music on 15th April, joined by Austrian live act HVOB, Kompakt duo Weval, Israeli two-piece Red Axes and acclaimed UK DJs Medlar and MermaidS.
HVOB are a two-piece live act who have been making waves far beyond their native Vienna since the duo’s inception in 2012. With their acclaimed debut album in 2013 and five following EPs, Anna Müller and Paul Wallner have crafted a unique panoply of sound: intelligent and driving, sparse and challenging. Trialog, their altogether darker and melodic second album, released last year to universal acclaim.
They’re joined by Red Axes, another duo act who set Bethnal Green on fire for their Ovation debut last year. Israeli producers Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi have been performing together for a long time, first as a post-punk band, before forming Red Axes in 2009. Deep, playful, faintly psychedelic, the duo’s debut LP Ballad Of The Ice combined elements of acid rock and left-of-centre house, incorporating live instruments into their production repertoire.
Weval are also locked in on for a live performance on April 15th. Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte first bonded over a shared love of electronic music while studying in their native Holland. The duo’s broad musical influences - trip-hop, house and jazz - are delicately sewed into their soft, melodic productions for the likes of Atomnation and Kompakt; while their much-vaunted live set has been heard everywhere from Rajasthan to Tel-Aviv.
Rounding out the bill are Wolf Music prodigy Medlar and Glasgow duo MermaidS. Medlar is rightly regarded as one of the UK’s deepest diggers, capable of effortlessly joining the dots between house, techno, disco, hip hop and everything in between. MermaidS have a similarly deep appreciation for 4/4 music old and new: the Glaswegians’ releases for the likes of Glasgow Underground and A Friend In Need expertly toe the line between Golden Era house and infectious disco.
