  • FICTION PRESENTS.. BELOW @ TEMPLE in the CATACOMBS Thursday, January 22nd techno electro mutant disco Featuring in the Catacombs: Rob Rives (Phantom Power, Floppy Sounds/ Wave Music, NYC) and Fiction residents: André Lucero (Fiction, Columbus, OH/ San Francisco) The Worker (Fiction, San Francisco) Christian Schmidt (Fiction, San Francisco) and in the Lounge: Ryan Poulsen (Gun Club, SF) and Conor (Red Dot, SF) Doors open at 10pm and goes until 2am / $5 door all night On January 22nd, Fiction presents it's first installment of Below in the Catacombs at Temple. Below explores the spectrum of sounds in the world of techno, electro and disco with forays into mutant variants such as stripped down electronic funk, leftfield robo-disco and gritty Krautrocking dancefloor jams. This month Fiction's Below hosts the accomplished and innovative producer, remixer and DJ from NYC, Rob Rives - the backbone of François K's esteemed label Wave Music and engineer for many of his and Danny Tenaglia's remixes and productions over the years. Residents André Lucero, Christian Schmidt and The Worker support Rives in the Catacombs. In the Lounge, Ryan Poulsen (Gun Club) and Conor (Rong Music, Red Dot) add their spin on acid house and mutant disco to the sounds from Below. Rob Rives (Phantom Power, Floppy Sounds/ Wave Music, NYC) http://www.myspace.com/robrivesofficial Innovative producer, remixer, DJ and engineer-extraordinaire Rob Rives is one of New York’s premiere architects of dark and penetrating electro-fuelled tech-house. While many may be familiar with his work as an engineer on records and remixes by Danny Tenaglia and François K. and as a co-producer on remixes for acts like Kraftwerk, Underworld and Can, it is his solo productions (both as a producer and remixer) that have seduced dance music lovers worldwide. Rob's signature sound explores the darker, more atmospheric realms of house and electronic music, incorporating a love of synthetic textures with the repetition and minimalism of modern disco. André Lucero (Fiction, Columbus, OH/ SF) http://www.myspace.com/djandrelucero A veteran of West Coast underground electronic music scene, André Lucero continues to reinvent himself. Starting with the earliest electro hip-hop to the present and future of electronic music, his selections are open minded but always have a dancefloor sensibility. From his involvement with the seminal San Francisco techhouse event/DJ crew, Urban Development; to playing with international legends for Space Children and recently for San Francisco techno staples [Kontrol], Black Market Techno and Listed, he has been a key contributor to SF's exploding electronic music scene. As a promoter and DJ for the SF based Fiction crew, André has forged a strong link between forward thinking sounds, upbeat fun and building a musical community. He recently relocated to Columbus, OH to focus on production and expanding the Fiction sound beyond California, returning monthly for Fiction events in SF. The Worker (Fiction, SF) http://www.myspace.com/dwurkur The Worker is deeply inspired and influenced by techno, house, tech house, and minimal and has consistently been searching for the freshest developments in these sounds and genres from various regions of the world. His sets reflect this broad vision and eclecticism but are rooted in a foundation of deep, grinding, yet funky, tech beats that make his sets resonant with most dancefloors. Promoter and DJ for the SF based event Fiction he can be found at Fiction's monthly residency at Vertigo w/ Christian Schmidt and rotating guests from SF's local techno community. Christian Schmidt (Fiction, SF) http://www.myspace.com/djchristianschmidt Bringing his musical imagination and talents all the way from Norway, Christian Schmidt is a DJ and promoter for SF's Fiction crew. Exploring the strong propulsive sounds of techno with branches into minimal and tweakier European productions Christian awakens and electrifies dancefloors with the latest and freshest cuts - often debuting tracks months ahead of other DJs. His technical skills behind the decks make tracks reinvent themselves in the mix and could make you reinvent some moves on the dancefloor. Ryan Poulsen (Gun Club, SF) http://www.myspace.com/gun_club Music Director and resident DJ Ryan Poulsen is a dance-floor veteran and Gun Club’s secret weapon. Ryan has been rifling through record stacks since the tender age of 17, cutting his teeth in the clubs and underground warehouses of San Diego and Los Angeles in the mid 90’s. This longtime vinyl nerd is one of the few Stateside DJs who can fuse- successfully, that is - a love of techno, house, electro and old rave with his childhood roots in punk, hard core, R&B, soul, and classic jams. Ryan has kept some sterling company over the past 12 years, having performed alongside the likes of Ian Brown, Tim Sweeney, Maurice Fulton, Lady Sovereign, Cypruss Hill, Black Eyed Peas, Barry Weaver, Joakim, Kaos, DJ Mehdi, Rub N Tug, Peaches, Broker/ Dealer, DJ Godfather, Erasure, Egyptian Lover, DJ Hell, Spank Rock and many more. Currently Ryan is the host of Pancake Radio, a popular weekly show broadcast live on West Add Radio 93.7 FM, as well as a resident at several San Francisco club nights, including Booty Basement SF at the Knockout, Last Wednesdays at the Casanova Lounge, and Playboy at the Stud. Conor (Rong Music, Red Dot, SF) It is believed that Conor was conceived in a dingy corridor at Paradise Garage, though this is unsubstantiated. Conor's extensive knowledge of the roots of todays dance music are well paired with his understanding of what makes the dancefloor tick. The combination can be lethal. Appearing on the chunky disco re-edit label Rong Music and promoter and DJ for the popular San Francisco event Red Dot, playing with LCD Soundsystem, Maurice Fulton, Metro Area, Lindstrom, Tim Sweeney, among others, for parties blending electro and acid house themes with underground disco gems, Conor delivers the goods to get down.
