On the back of an unforgettable MMW Live Music Laneway Safari, Boney’s adjoining Westwood Place will once again come alive to the sounds of Detroit flavoured house, disco and techno in the afternoon sun, and continue well into the wee hours inside Boney with a rare intimate club appearance from an Australian techno pioneer.
Returning to Australia after a short hiatus, Marcellus “Malik” Pittman is commonly regarded by heads as one of the world’s very best disco and house DJs, continually honing his craft since his DJ pursuits began in Detroit in the early 90s.
As a producer, he released his initial works in 1993 with local Hip-Hop collective “Home Grown”. Shortly thereafter, he released the now legendary “Essential Selections, Vol. 1” on the Sound Signature label, headed by Theo Parrish.
In 1998, Malik forged a working relationship with Rick Wilhite, Theo Parrish and Kenny “Moodymann” Dixon, collectively known as the 3 Chairs. As producers and selectors, they have helped to define an integral part of the Detroit sound.
Adelaide’s inimitable DJ HMC was one of the early pioneers of house and techno in Australia, and one of the main players behind Juice Records (Australia) which helped put Australian techno on the map from around 1991. A recent resurgence of his classic mid 90s hits such as Phreakin’, LSD, 6AM and Cum On has once again proved why Cam Bianchetti is rightly hailed as the ‘godfather of Australian techno’.
