His impressive 20-year history of creating arguably some of the most timeless, soulful techno ever created, is unquestionable. But, to the newer generation of club-goers, who aren’t aware of his contributions, now serves as the time to re-establish his position as one of the most valuable forces in dance music today. On his popularity, Larkin states: “I’m more like the artist’s artist. I’ve had very successful electronic artists tell me constantly how much I’ve influenced them, but, to the newer generations of club-goers, my name might not be as well known. I like to say, I’m famous for not being famous!” The respect and admiration he garners from his fans, electronic musicians, and journalists globally leave little doubt as to his relevance, and influence in a genre that sometimes can be described as lacking in feeling, warmth and musicality. It is that musicality that allowed him to give us an unforgettable collection of original material and remixes, such as the amazingly groovy Inner City “Share My Life” or the equally stunning remix done for Ben Klock’s “OK”. The building blocks of his signature sound are rooted in his early exposure to jazz, funk, and soul, in addition to other more electronic influences. These styles all serve as the backbone of his unique style. This was a key component in the formation of the second wave of Detroit Techno, alongside artists such as Carl Craig. Larkin’s small, but impressive catalog of work of over the years, all displays his ability to chisel out of the often cold hard machines, his own sound that is all heart and soul. Quite simply, this is electronic soul music. It was the mid-‘90s, the heyday of techno in Munich-Riem, home to the Optimal and other legendary clubs, when Daniel Bortz stepped into the never-ending, untiring loop of the stoically pumping bass drum. He was born in Berlin in 1981, but for the last 15 years has been forging his deep beats, grooves and tracks for the club world from his base of operations in Augsburg. And it‘s precisely that club world that Bortz has been gracing with his release. His style includes crate-digging, house-nostalgia, dancefloor-transfer, sample insanity and a healthy dose of eclecticism. Be it '80s new wave, '90s West Coast hip hop, disco or dance mania, Daniel Bortz brings things together that aren‘t bound up with realness and street credibility - he fuses his own world of sound for today's dance floor, with his refined sense of harmony playing a major role: "I work a lot with tunings. It takes a lot of work to make a few harmonic elements fit perfectly together. I make sure the bass drum and percussion match the tonality of the samples and harmonise with one another". He stands firmly rooted in two worlds, and is as aware of his special status in the close-knit Bavarian scene as he is of the sceptical gloom-and- doom prophecies of Berlin’s music buffs: "While being a music producer in Augsburg has its challenges, I don‘t just want to play for those in the know. I like appealing to a mixed audience that doesn‘t mind if I play Whitney Houston or Phoenix now and then". Daniel does whatever he feels like, a simple and most respectable approach that sets him apart from run-of-the-mill hitmakers, who crank out the next short-lived club hype. Ewan Pearson has been making music for a living since 1998. In that time he has worked as a recording artist (Maas, World of Apples, Partial Arts), a remixer (Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, Goldfrapp, Seelenluft, Metronomy, Jessie Ware), a record producer and mix engineer (The Rapture, Tracey Thorn, M83, Delphic, Jagwar Ma), a DJ (Panoramabar, Robert Johnson, Space Ibiza), a published academic (‘Discographies’, Routledge: 1999, with Jeremy Gilbert) and a magazine columnist (Groove Magazine, Germany 2007-2012). In 2013 Ewan co-produced and mixed debut albums from Footprintz and Jagwar Ma and completed remixes for Fairmont, Deadstock 33s, Out Cold, Röyksopp, Exercise One and Emperor Machine. This year he has produced ‘Hendra’ the first solo album in over 30 years from Everything But The Girl’s Ben Watt (featuring Bernard Butler of Suede, Leo Taylor of The Invisible and Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour), mixed the debut album from NYC’s TV Baby and is currently working on the debut album from AKASE, a new project from UK producer Midland and singer Robbie Redway. He has also remixed the latest single from Tensnake ft. Nile Rodgers ‘Love Sublime’, Jagwar Ma’s ‘Uncertainty’ and S.R.Krebs’ ‘She Like’. In June Ewan will release a new single ‘Taifa’ for Kompakt as Partial Arts (with Al Usher). Every musician aspires to communicate with audiences in their own unique language. Konstantin Sibold’s cultured approach to performance and production has forged a style that is both distinctive and personal. Born in Stuttgart in 1987, music in a diverse array of forms was an enduring backdrop to Konstantin’s youth. In 2009, whilst a student engineer, he became the youngest resident of legendary Stuttgart club, Rocker 33 and there, two years later, Konstantin and his close friend Leif Müller started their own event series, Common Sense People. The emphasis at these parties is on providing an intimate insight into one artist, with extended sets and focused programming the basis for all their events. Performances by DJ Koze, Roman Flügel and Levon Vincent have earned their parties a justifiable reputation across the German underground. This appreciation of truly narrative performance is pervasive, as Konstantin himself is becoming notorious for his expansive long sets. Appearances from Panorama Bar to Trouw to Concrete to Womb Tokyo have only cemented his status as an innovative DJ, able to imbue any night with a pulsating energy. As a producer, Konstantin’s burgeoning reputation led to him being voted ‘Newcomer of the Year 2013' by the readers of Groove Magazine, ahead of other lauded acts from Recondite to Disclosure. In 2010 his debut vinyl “Neuland” received significant support from the Innervisions & Kompakt family. In 2011, his classic house release “Leif/Mariam” drew widespread acclaim, with tastemaker Move D acknowledging in an interview it to be one of his favourite tracks of that year. Additional releases followed on Caramelo and Snork Enterprises, before “Madeleine” attracted the attention of Dixon and Âme. Its eventual release on Innervisions ultimately propelled Konstantin onto the world stage. Subsequent remix requests for renowned pop acts followed, including Lana Del Rey, Gus Gus and Röyksopp. Konstantin's remix for DJ Yellow & Flowers And Sea Creatures became a massive club hit, receiving support from people such as Sven Väth, Ricardo Villalobos, Dixon and Tale Of Us and was voted to #2 'Remix of the Year 2013' in Groove Magazine. Konstantin’s extensive back-catalogue features releases on a series of prestigious labels, from Kompakt to DFA to Mute Records. Konstantin has repeatedly shown he pays little attention to genres and pigeon-holing. He moves fleet-footed between musical categories, with a characteristic confidence that his quintessential style will shine through, whatever the musical template. In the studio, just as in the DJ booth, Konstantin lives and breathes the idea that music is fluid and that setting constraints based on convention and expectation will only suffocate musical personality. With his touring schedule becoming ever-busier, now is the time to see for yourself. Mr Mendel, an Amsterdam native, started out spinning records at the infamous Duivel. This landed him a residency at Freakin Ill, an oldschool club night at Bitterzoet, Amsterdam. Mr Mendel soon discovered that hiphop just wasn’t enough. His job at Waxwell Records introduced him to soul, disco, afro and brazil records. He instantly fell in love with the smell of dust, thousands of album covers and the crackling sound of old vinyl. Mr Mendel has developed his DJ’ing skills to an all-round style, collecting and spinning dance music from all corners of the globe with only one condition: “as long as it’s good soulful music”. Always selecting passionate, intriguing tunes. You'll hear sexy melodies, funk filled basslines, energetic drums, exotic percussion and euphoric vocals. Sometimes you’ll catch him play banging disco and house, while at other times he might surprise you with downtempo soul and tropical vibes… Currently he holds diverse residencies in Amsterdam at parties like I Love Vinyl, Wicked Jazz Sounds and Doka, which continue to attract an enthusiastic crowd of music lovers. He also curates the tropical playlist for 22tracks Amsterdam. Mr Mendel knows how to rock a party with his soulful, upbeat, heartfelt musical extravaganza! Influenced by & played alongside DJ's like Rich Medina, Rahaan, Sadar Bahar, John Morales, Lefto, Marcel Vogel, Rob Manga, KC The Funkaholic. Paramida made her name as an integral part of the new Berlin school of DJs embracing a more expansive sound than straight forward house and Techno. Now most well known for her stellar label, Love on The Rocks, Paramida has managed to carve out a globe trotting DJ career based purely on her skills as a party starting DJ. In fact, Love on The Rocks can actually be seen as a clear statement of musical intent, with all of the music presented being handpicked by Paramida, and aptly showcasing her discofied tropical leanings, and her love for the more skewed side of House Music. Sharpening her tastes over 5 years as a mainstay at Berlin's world famous OYE Records, and making her name as originally as a resident at Renate, Paramida can now be found regularly playing in such hallowed haunts as Panorama Bar, Frankfurt's Robert Johnson and Croatia's Garden / Love International Festival, as well as all over Europe, The US and Central America · GET IN TOUCH / [email protected]
