DJ Masda, founder of Cabaret and one of Japan’s most revered DJs, plays The Pickle Factory on 27th May, joined by Toi.Toi.’s Junki Inoue and Tom & Sohrab.
In the pantheon of great Japanese DJs, few are as deeply-respected as Yuki Masda. Since the mid 1990s, Masda has released, mixed and championed a strain of slick, hypnotic, richly textured minimal house that’s as indebted to Basic Channel as Perlon and Playhouse. DJ Masda’s reputation in his home country is built upon a couple of key parties. The first was Osaka’s legendary Quop, where as resident Yuki shared the booth with European guests such as Lawrence and Daniel Bell. The second is Masda’s own Cabaret, which celebrated its 16th year last October. From its home base in Tokyo’s Unit, Cabaret has latterly toured the world, including notable stops in Berlin’s Salon Zur Wilden Renate and Club Der Visionaere. Now a label that’s released EPs from Masda’s minimal peers Binh, Evan Baggs and TC80, Cabaret’s music stands for everything we love about DJ Masda - elegant, understated, composed with style, sophistication and passion.
He’s joined by another Japanese DJ imbued with technical precision, a special record collection and a warm, affable presence: Toi.Toi. resident Junki Inoue. A friend and protégé of the other founder of Japanese minimalism, Fumiya Tanaka, Junki has quietly gained a reputation as one of London’s finest DJs since arriving in the UK four years ago. Having since showcased his blend of trippy house and funky minimal for on-point parties across Europe, it’s a pleasure to welcome Junki for his Pickle Factory debut. Get Well founders Tom & Sohrab round the lineup. Get Well is a sporadic, low-key but high quality London soirée that’s invited Avos, a.p.prods and Bruno Schmidt since its inception in 2013. Highly regarded DJs and deeper than deep diggers, Tom & Sohrab have latterly composed a series of superb mixes for the likes of Elevate and Yay.
