Dance music chameleon Martyn makes his debut in The Pickle Factory on 15th July, joined by Smallville mainstay Christopher Rau.
Martyn is one of the electronic scene’s most prolific, indefatigable, and willingly eclectic artists. Across an eleven year career, he’s made all sorts of music: first spearheading the nascent Dutch drum & bass scene, then becoming a pioneering force in the crossover between dubstep and techno with releases for Apple Pips and Revolve:r. Now, Martyn specialises in a slick, all-encompassing brand of techno that brims with his early broken beat influences, putting out a series of acclaimed albums and EPs for Brainfeeder, Ninja Tune, Ostgut Ton and his own label, 3024. Still, the Dutchman remains uniquely difficult to pin down, recently collaborating with Four Tet, and exploring a more florid house sound for releases on Steffi’s Dolly Dubs imprint.
He’s joined by Smallville affiliate and Oval Space favourite Christopher Rau. Twice before, Christopher has blown the roof off our sister space, most recently stealing the show with a closing DJ set at our Smallville Records showcase in February. Rau’s relationship with Smallpeople’s label goes back much further. The Berlin-based producer has been there since Smallville’s very beginning, and his beguiling brand of richly textured, featherlight deep house is tailor-made for the Hamburg label. He’s not just a Smallville artist however: since his first release in 2008, Rau’s produced for house heavyweights Giegling, Junk Yark Connections, Pampa and most recently Max Graef and Glenn Astro’s Money $ex Records. On 15th July, Christopher Rau brings his inimitable style to the altogether more intimate surroundings of The Pickle Factory for an extended session.
