  • Love in Babylon is a fundraiser event raising awareness about domestic violence; highlighting that there is always Light in the Darkness, and Love in what is considered Sin or Taboo. BenEVOLence, the team behind Love in Babylon is a collective of visual, musical, performing and live artists who aim to produce a platform for freedom of expression, promoting love and respect over fear and hate. BenEVOLence are running their second fundraiser event, themed around ancient Babylonian astronomy. All profits from Love in Babylon events will go to the Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria (DVRCV). Further information about the DVRCV can be found through the link below. http://www.dvrcv.org.au/dv-donations We are passionate about raising awareness about domestic violence, as it is highly prevalent among Australian women, men and children; is correlated with many physical, emotional and mental illnesses; is symbolic of larger structural-belief-systems we wish to challenge; and is generally unspoken about and unacknowledged. **Cosmic Roots** Babylonians are the earliest civilization who have remains of written records and systems of astronomy and astrology as we know it today; with clay/cuneiform tablets dating back to 3000-4000 B.C. Even though they lacked telescopes and other observational devices; their arithmetical models were extremely effective, leading to highly precise predictions. The Babylonian calendar beginning at the vernal (spring) equinox was highly similar to our own, with 7 days in a week and 12 months in a year. Many differences between then and now is their use of both lunar and solar cycles, requiring an additional 13th month to solve their problem of lunar months being out of sync with solar years and seasons. The earliest Babylon records on celestial divination began with five recognized planets, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Mercury and Saturn. These planets and the moon and the sun were each identified with Babylonian gods; and it was believed the god’s plans for Earth could be understood and predicted in their cycles and movements. Venus was identified with the goddess Ishtar; Mars with Nergal; Jupiter with Marduk; Mercury with Nabu; Saturn with Ninib; the moon with Sin and the Sun with Shamash. These gods/goddesses are described all over the world right through history in various myths, stories and religions*...yet each has its own narrative...with many recent depictions placing Ishtar/feminine in negative light... for example, the Christians 'Whore of Babylon'. Babylon is also associated with both the rise and fall in humanity...it represents the development of civilization in education, social and political areas; while also the spread of violence and cruelty. The gift of agriculture lead to domination over nature; people and cities were raided and destroyed in the growing of an empire; and of course there's the story and all the religious, political and patriarchal associations of the 'Whore of Babylon'... But we have found the Love in Babylon...the music, the art, the people and connections; that is where the love is. Like the Babylonians using their naked eye to watch the planets in the sky, join us on July 15th to celebrate the visibility of not only Saturn and Mars but also the Supergiant Star ANTARES, A.K.A “the Heart of Scorpius". And let us consciously, collectively raise our vibrations to the frequency of love, to battle the fear and hate behind the terror and violence. <3
