NIKOLA BAYTALA (Psychopath / Output )
San Francisco/New York DJ Nikola Baytala has become a crucial component of the minimal-techno collective known as Kontrol. But don't typecast him as a one-dimensional droid with a M-nus Records logo tattoo. He's been exploring the upper echelons of the techno/house continuum since the early '90s (including the last 10 years at The Top, a weekly event hosted by S.W.A.T., aka Special Weapons and Tactics), gaining a reputation as a DJ's DJ, with acclaim coming from house-music legends like Derrick Carter and Doc Martin.
When you see a DJ possess such wide-ranging, outstanding taste, it instills confidence that he/she will rarely, if ever, veer into wackness. Baytala clearly has put many hours of study into his craft, and it's paid off with smooth mixes and world-class track selection. Besides his formidable technical skills and profound knowledge, Baytala reportedly exudes a lot of personality and passion behind the decks, which must have served him well while opening for acts like Jane's Addiction.
Charlotte de Witte (Turbo Recordings/Belgium)
For all the emphasis on good times and euphoria in clubland there’s always been a dark side to electronic music, a side that 23 year old DJ/producer and one of Belgium’s most exciting new talents Charlotte de Witte has readily embraced.
Her debut release as Charlotte de Witte on Tiga’s Turbo Recordings received called “Weltschmerz EP” gained massive national and internatonal support. For now, her upcoming releases, her ongoing radio show, Fuse residency and a packed tour diary de Witte shows no sign of slowing down. Despite her love of all things dark, the future for Charlotte de Witte looks very bright indeed.
GUADA FK (Hypenation)
Guada Fk began her music quest late 90’s in New York City, and to this day she continues drifting nomad way, oscillating around Europe, North America and Mexico. Her fascination with electronic music sparkled at early age in Mexico City, when she discovered Synthpop, New Wave, Industrial, Electro and other sonic innovations of the 80’s, further introduction to the Rave scene inspired her early travels seeking for further and more complex sounds, open for a transformation.
Taking original inspiration from the early eras of House, Techno and Electro Guada has experimented with a vast number of styles. Fifteen years of collecting music, playing it along side the famous and infamous artists alike, performing for renown and unknown venues, promoters and festivals, so as living in six different countries have lead her to learn her own studio-based experimentations, which now are her primary focus.
CRY BABY
With her feet planted firmly in the underground and her head high in the clouds, Cry Baby’s meteoric impact on NYC nightlife has been undeniable since her arrival. Demonstrating a masterful control of both the tone and feel of her sets, and by extension, her audience, she’s set herself apart from both the “it" DJs and scene veterans alike with her fresh take on techno and house.
Last year saw her upward trajectory increase as her House On Mute parties took to such lauded venues as Brooklyn’s Output, Le Bain at The Standard and Cielo in NYC, Miami’s Electric Pickle, and countless cavernous Brooklyn warehouses. Her deep, unrelenting and forceful sound shifted bodies and perceptions in whatever room you found her. The coming year promises a focus on touring and production so that more of the world might have the opportunity to experience the force that is Cry Baby.
BRENNAN GREEN (Chinatown / DFA / Crosstown Rebels / Balihu)
Brennan Green is an Canadian-born, New York-based DJ, songwriter, record producer, multi-instrumentalist, and audio engineer. As of 2016, he has nearly 100 releases under his belt, while still touring all over the world DJing. Best known for his dissonant disco sound, Green has released on acclaimed labels like Daniel Wang's proto disco-house Balihu Records, collaborated with the surviving members of Arthur Russell's Loose Joints band for the self-titled "Arthur's Landing" LP, produced an acid-house-idiom cover of Hot Chocolate's "Don't Turn It Off" by 40 Thieves, and remixed the likes of Ajello, Seth Troxler, and Chicken Lips, as well as the Franz Ferdinand/Debbie Harry/LCD Soundsystem collaboration "Live Alone."
As an artist and DJ, Green never stops evolving. In 2001, he started monthly party Pop Your Funk at legendary NYC venue APT, where he played alongside such guests as Andrew Weatherall, Joakim, Lindstrom, Liquid Liquid's Sal P, and Maurice Fulton, creating a unique mix of raw disco, postpunk, and cosmic house that led to the release of his successful mix CD by the same name. In 2005, he started eclectic independent label Chinatown Records, which allowed him to find an outlet for his own creative endeavors, while signing records by Arthur's Landing, Studio, Runaway and a slew of others.
FACETS (Samo Records / glitterballnyc.com)
Facets comes to Brooklyn by way of Belgrade and London, with a passion for all things electro, acid, balearic, house, and beyond. His DJ sets are often characterized by an eclectic mix of chuggier low-tempo sounds, leftfield techno, and classic italo.
In addition to his duties as curator and resident of glitterballnyc.com's parties, he has booked and played with some of nightlife's greats, such as Kink, Willie Burns, Man Power, Marcos Cabral, Heretic, Shawn O'Sullivan, In Flagranti, Hugo Capablanca, and Tunnel Signs, to name a few. 2016 will see the launch of his new label, Samo Records, which will celebrate the darker side of dance music -- details to be announced soon!
