Complex Grand Opening & EPM 15 Year Anniversary with Jeff Mills

  • For the Grand Opening of Complex Maastricht we managed to book a living legend to help celebrate EPM's 15 year anniversary! Jeff Mills is simply without peer and considered one of the most brilliant DJ and producers of techno music in the world. With a DJ career that pre-dates techno, he began as a DJ on WDRQ radio in 1984, subsequently going on to co-found the highly-influential Underground Resistance with “Mad Mike Banks”. By 1992, Mills created his own label “Axis”, where he continues to uphold his artistic independence and produce timeless electronic music compositions. More recently Mills has gone on to work with orchestras, taking his productions – and the world of techno - to new heights. He unveils his next orchestral collaboration at the Barbican Centre next year, with music inspired by Gustav Holst’s ‘The Planets’. Meanwhile his 3 hour set at COMPLEX will be an incendiary mindbomb of techno wizardry! Also playing on the night is another US techno pioneer, Dan Curtin. Dan’s musical quest began amidst the inception of the techno and house phenomenon of the early 1990s. From his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio Dan experimented with a vast number of styles, producing innovative sounds of every variety: from Chicago to Detroit to the East Coast. Dan’s considerably impressive discography dates back to 1992 when his first releases on Detroit’s 33 RPM Records and Belgium’s Buzz motivated him to launch his own production hub: Metamorphic Recordings. His unwillingness to commit to a singular style was instrumental to his continuously fresh releases on big players such as Peacefrog, Strictly Rhythm and Sublime, and Soma while his forward-thinking approach brought him tremendous support from the likes of Carl Cox, Carl Craig, and many more. Over 70 singles, nine albums later Dan is just as innovative and fresh as he has ever been whether recording under his own name or under one of his his many aliases such as Purveyors of Fine Funk. His refusal to lock himself into one style as well as his unique ability to collaborate with artists from a variety of genres has helped him to maintain not only his status as an individual amongst a world of ever-increasingly like-minded musicians but also his status as a legend over nearly two decades. As part of EPM’s 15 Year celebrations, Dan also released the acclaimed ‘Galaxies Merging’ EP on the label this February and we very much look forward to welcoming Mr. Curtin to the night! EPM co-founder, Oliver Way is one half of Detroit Grand Pubahs with Paris the Black Fu, Oliver Way – aka Mr. O has played the world over. Taking in everything from house, techno, electro and rave Oliver returns to his long running collaboration with Claydrum. As a producer he has released on BulletDodge, Motech, Urban Substance, Torque, EPMMusic and the Pubahs own labels Detelefunk & Engineroom, most recently with his ‘Youth In Asia / Magic Flange’ collaboration with Ben Long for Engineroom.
