Minimal house maestro Sonja Moonear plays a rare intimate gig at The Pickle Factory on 18th November, with an extended set for revered London record head Andrew James Gustav, supported by Toby Nicholas.
Perlon mainstay; Ricardo Villalobos’ protegé; collector and DJ of sublime electronic music in all styles, rhythms and textures: Sonja Moonear is all this and more. The Swiss native specialises in a lean, trippy style of house and techno whose spiritual home is Club Der Visionaere, and whose founding father is old German master Zip. Indeed, Moonear’s rise to prominence is closely entwined with the diminutive Perlon founder. Having hosted Zip during her residency at Geneva’s famed Weetamix, she was invited to warm the floor at Get Perlonized, and hasn’t looked back since. Now a regular at clubbing institutions Robert Johnson, Panorama Bar and CDV, Moonear is simply one of the very finest DJs in dance music. In Sonja’s hands, you might hear shuffling minimal mixed with acid house, or electro into dub techno, but always bridged by subtle transitions that never sound rushed or disjointed. No one has an ear for groove quite like her - not even her mentor, Ricardo Villalobos.
She’s joined by a long overdue return for one of our favourite London DJs, Andrew James Gustav. Andrew is someone we’ve looked forward to welcoming back since he tore the roof off The Pickle Factory back in March. A DJ and record geek without equal in the UK, his style starts at classic tech house and breaks, then stretches endlessly in all directions, taking in abstract techno, oddball house and stripped-back 2-step. The Pickle Factory’s Toby Nicholas lends support on the night.
