Rbma Montréal 2016 Pres.: Fucked Up & Tanya Tagaq

  • In the Red Bull Music Academy spirit of collaboration, we’re proud to present the first live performance of Toronto hardcore warriors Fucked Up and Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq, at La Tulipe on September 28th. Fucked Up and Tanya Tagaq have both won the prestigious Polaris Music Prize – for their albums The Chemistry of Common Life and Animism respectively – but their approaches to sound are far from mainstream. Fucked Up’s experimental take on hardcore punk music has seen them hailed as one of the most forward-thinking Canadian groups working today, and their politically charged ethos finds a kinship with Tanya Tagaq: the “polar punk” whose throat singing gives a powerful voice to the indigenous Canadian experience; Inuit pain and ecstasy expressed through song. After working on a 30-minute improvisation piece, “Our Own Blood,” in 2015, this year sees them take to the Red Bull Music Academy stage in Montreal together for the first time. Support on the night comes from two Red Bull Music Academy 2016 participants, Emma-Jean Thackray and The Venopian Solitude.
