From the people that brought you Standard Planets and Mirage, a new daytime club and live music event to soothe those true heads fried by the weekend’s exploits: Riviera Breeze. Going 1-7pm and possibly beyond, DJ’s HP Sorcery, Matthew Balaam and Secret Son will be your inter-dimensional tour guides through a blissed-out journey of hazey disco, transcendental New Age, a lighter shade of Italo, waves of Balearic & sun-drenched Kosmische, and all brought to you from Brighton seafront.
Guest this month, and playing her debut Brighton-show, is WDC-based bassist/singer Eva Moolchan aka Sneaks. The 2016 re-issue on Merge Records of Moolchan's minimalist art punk LP, previously released by French label Danger Records in 2015, reminds of post-punk legends Pylon or a dubbed-out ESG. Sneaks are in good company on Merge Record, with the label having previously released the likes of Caribou, Elenour Friedberger, The Magnetic Fields, M Ward, Polvo, Pram and Tracey Thorn.
Our new resident-guest is 20jazzfunkgreats main-man and Blue Tapes & X-Ray Records founder David McNamee. Blue Tapes boast a roster that includes the likes of Mats Gustaffson and Katie Gately, to name a few, and is currently working on a multimedia history charting the first 100 years of dance records in collaboration with Nesta and NTS Radio. David will be bringing records from across his time at Blue Tapes, 20jfg and NTS Radio to Riviera Breeze.
Standard Planets have spent the last couple of years collaborating and releasing records with avant disco legends Arthur’s Landing (Arthur Russell, Dinosaur L/Loose Joints), Ash Ra Tempel’s Harald Grosskopf (Manuel Gottsching, Klaus Schulze, Cosmic Jokers), italo titans BWH/Blackway (House Of Music) and writer Iain Sinclair (Penguin), having gained a ton of press from the likes of The Guardian, Q Magazine, FACT, The Quietus and Red Bull Music Academy for each release.
Mirage is a monthly Italo and Hi-NRG club night, and radio show, that keeps the Green Door Store at capacity from start to finish, with queues round the block every time. Matteo and HP are branching out, and will be bringing an altogether more relaxed side of their collections to Riviera Breeze and The Hope.
