Ryan Elliott is half of the A&R team behind Matthew Dear's Spectral Sound imprint, and a resident at the legendary Panorama Bar. His "Panorama Bar 06" is an example to all DJs in the art of programming a mix. Derek Plaslaiko is a member of Detroit's Interdimensional Transmissions crew, responsible for a label of the same name and the legendary No Way Back party series. Our own Dansman does the opening honors for this edition of FOCUS, thawing the room with acidic, chunky and dub-techno selections.
Legendary Detroit disc jockey Norm Talley makes his rooftop debut alongside the club debut of the tireless Daniel Andres. Deep Secrets' Benoit sets us on our journey. RYAN ELLIOTT:
“What matters most, above all else, is what comes through the speakers,” says Detroit’s Ryan Elliot. “It must be the right track at the right time, delivered in the right way.” Nobody knows this better than Elliott, whose distinction as an internationally respected DJ, remixer, and one-half of Spectral Sound’s A&R team has grown steadily over his decade-plus behind the decks. They don’t hand out “DJ’s DJ” reputations at the club door, and Elliott’s is well-earned and well-deserved.
Ryan Elliott's early days included legendary residencies at Ann Arbor’s Goodnight Gracies and Detroit’s Shelter, which soon gave way to a rigorous international travel schedule. He began working crowds at clubs and festivals around the world, from NYC’s Guggenheim Museum to Barcelona’s Sonar by Night, and tailoring his approach to each show with a meticulous ear and a bottomless record collection. Influenced by his hometown staples (Axis, Purpose Maker, M Plant, and UR) along with international labels like Perlon, Playhouse, and early Kompakt, Ryan inhabits his kick drums, becoming an extension of the music and vice versa.
2009 saw Elliott relocating to Berlin to further his focus on DJing, production, and helming Spectral Sound’s growing roster from a newly international perspective. “Berlin and Detroit may not look the same, but they feel the same," he says. "The connection isn't just in the music, but also in both cities rough edges and honest hearts."
Ryan Elliot's sound remains unchanged: bassline-driven techno and house reduced to their essence, thoughtfully calibrated to drive crowds out of their minds. The time is right, the tracks are right, and Ryan Elliott is exactly where he needs to be.
DEREK PLASLAIKO:
Some people filter through the record bins, taking what are on the wall or record store employee suggestions. Then there are people who dig deeper into the dusty crates, and absorb music like a sponge; ignoring labels, bucking trends and are forever on a quest to find the perfect record. The ones that make the staunchest of chin stroking, note taking trainspotters lose their shit on the dancefloor, hanging on every record from one to the next. Derek Plaslaiko unquestionably falls into the latter category.
With a reputation for high energy sets that were versatile and tasteful, Plaslaiko slowly became in demand on the Midwestern club circuit; sharing the stage with such techno luminares as John Acquaviva, Kevin Saunderson, Richardo Villalobos, Baby Ford, and Matthew Herbert. It was also during that time Plaslaiko was asked by Carl Craig to perform at the inaugural edition of the Detroit Electronic Music Festival.
Currently, Derek is one of the resident DJs at the Bunker (Public Assembly) in NYC. Most recently, he was honored in the Village Voice 2006’s “Best Of” poll as New York’s Best Techno DJ. And this will be the year we finally hear some production out of him with releases scheduled for Perc Trax and Introduction Records.
NORM TALLEY:
Born and raised on Detroits westside in the late 60's Norm's addiction to music began at an early age.By the age of 13 years old Norm's diverse musical outlook consisted of Disco,Progressive,Jazz.Starting off Norm collected good music(45's-8-tracks-Vinyl)with proceeds earned from his paper route and eventually was introduced to Ken Collier who just happened to live 3 blocks over so needless to say most of the Disco and Progressive I attained was through Ken who was a DJ mentor for me.At this point and time I only had one turntable an eight-track player a receiver and some speakers.So I would have friends over and play records and we would dance until we were sweating!!So one day a friend that would come over and vibe was having a backyard party and needed a DJ and asked me to do it which was really special to me because I had never did a party in my life,I only had one turntable and couldn't mix!!So back to Grindstone I went to earn the money to buy a turntable and a mixer and a tape deck which I had about two months to get.At that time I made about $30 dollars a week and before you know it I was at HD Sounds putting together a system(Gem Sounds,Sharp tape deck excellent for pause button mixes,pioneer turntable)So it was on!I did the party which turned out to be a success and got some more offers to do more gigs which began a career on the decks that stands to date!!So in 1985 I began to archive the mixes I was doing on Cassette tapes(over 500)and did that for 15 years up until the year 2000 when I began making mixed CDs which I have over 400 to date!
DANIEL ANDRES:
A native of Detroit, Daniel Andres has been involved with the Detroit electronic music scene for over a decade.Influenced by Richie Hawtin,John Acquaviva,Delano Smith,Norm Talley And a myriad of Detroit talent he aquired his first set of turntables in 1997. He began his journey by playing his first gig at the legendary Motor Lounge.
Keeping with his love for vinyl, while living in a digital age, Daniel enjoys the best of both worlds by using wax, Ableton Live, and the Maschine. Through the use of these technologies he is able to utilize 4 decks, loops, and countless effects to experiment and meticulously mix sounds to keep the dance floor moving. Pulling from his techno, house, disco and Motown influences, Daniel has created a sound all his own. Those that have heard his sets say that the can best be described as deep, dark, and sexy, which leaves them hot, sweaty and wanting more.
Currently Daniel is working under Stacey Pullen’s Radio Skool, and his event schedule is growing rapidly with tour dates in North America, Europe, and beyond.
