  • THE PLAYGROUND launches their next event at Electric Brixton featuring the new live show from French techno-electronica artist VITALIC and a rare UK performances from US artists COM TRUISE and LORN on the 11th March. It’s been a good fifteen years now since Vitalic (aka Pascal Arbez-Nicolas) took it upon himself to redefine techno using his native French sensibility, mixing energy and melody to forge his own recognisable style. Many of those tunes, like “Poney”, “La Rock 01”, “My Friend Dario” and “You Prefer Cocaine” went on to become club classics, blurring the boundaries between techno, disco, rock and pop, and profoundly inspiring and stimulating a scene that had been struggling since the end of the ‘French touch’ to find something a little more refreshing than filtered disco house. It could be said that Vitalic ushered in the French Touch 2.0, masterfully bringing bangers back into fashion and putting France back on the dancefloor map. With his first production signed by tastemaker DJ Hell for his Gigolo imprint, Vitalic paid scant regard to genre boundaries and concentrated on simply knocking out some killer tunes – a mix of irresistible melodies, stampeding synths and pure energy. Within a few years, French electronica had changed direction, eschewing the dancefloors for which it had originally been conceived and starting to tour, live. A revolution was born - Vitalic opened the way and Daft Punk, Justice and Etienne de Crecy followed. ► COM TRUISE- Having just released his eagerly anticipated “Silicon Tare EP”, the Ghostly international forerunner has made a monumental impact since his debut release the 'Cyanide Sisters' EP. Hard to pigeonhole, Truise's (AKA Seth Hayley) experimental take on electronica can only be simplified to "bottom heavy" and has been quoted calling it "mid-fi synth-wave, slow-motion funk”. With word of a new album on the horizon, stay tuned for further updates as Com Truise launches a new album in early 2017. ► LORN- Unafraid and unhinged, Lorn’s music is exquisitely dark and ominous, simmering with anger that churns forcefully against a furtive longing. Yet Lorn passes far beyond this evocative brutality and plunges head first into the absurd; he draws not only a portrait of shadowy struggle but also arouses a dynamic universe of sentiments using deconstructed sounds and skills built from the ground up. Lorn’s debut full-length album Nothing Else, released on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, has stirred the minds of listeners and rattled the keyboards of critics around the world, accumulating praise from musical authorities such as Pitchfork and the BBC, as well as bloggers and the online underground alike. Lorn, is an impassioned performer who commands the crowd, with a stage presence that parallels the extreme emotional output of his music. Expect no less than greatness from this artist; certitude and concern is a potent combination for the creation of beauty, and from the unconquerable will of one shall no doubt emerge profound musical experiences for many. ►Mamiko Motto is a DJ, producer, composer and founder of the GASS record label. Her leading radio show on NTS is recognised for breaking some of the biggest underground artists in electronic music and she is, as Frank 151 describes—“A Swiss Army knife of the music industry.” An international touring DJ, Mamiko produces and composes under various monikers including Wednesday Nite, with previous releases on Warp and Big Dada. Her sound design for video games has been featured in “Butterstar Galactica” by Hudson Mohawke and other audiovisual projects.
