Irrepressible musical mavericks Coldcut celebrate 30 years working together and debut new music in headline show at Electric Brixton, supported by Californian musical maverick, Gonjasufi, plus special guests to be announced.
Lauded as the number 3 DJs of all time by Music Radar, Coldcut celebrate 30 years working together in 2017. From their origins as “the first Brit artists to really get hip-hop’s class-cutup aesthetic,” Coldcut introduced rap to ravers, creating a heady blend of hip-hop production aesthetics and proto-acid house grooves, and became a precursor for scenes as diverse as electronica, breakbeat, ambient and baggy. Coldcut’s Jon More and Matt Black created some of the most thrilling, experimentally minded productions of that era before going on to found Ninja Tune Records. With a remit simply to release the future-gazing records that excited them most, the label is still doing exactly that – over 25 years later. This performance will see Coldcut back in the vanguard of electronic music, and performing on a bill with some of the best musical mavericks from around the world.
San Diego rapper, yoga teacher and Flying Lotus ally, Gonjasufi is one of the most mystifying voices on Warp Records. The haggardly psychedelic and Eastern-influenced feel of Gonjasufi is layered and complex. ‘Callus’, his third album for Warp, is one of the most challenging and raw recordings of his career.
Special guest Kode9 vibrates parts other DJs can only dream of. His DJ sets and radio shows helped spread the early dubstep sound internationally, but his sets now weave together a bass heavy mix of house, garage, dubstep, grime, footwork and hip hop.
