Oval Space Music presents Ron Morelli, DJ Sotofett, Maurice Fulton

  • Three maverick DJs converge on Oval Space—we have no idea how this night will unfold musically, but we're sure it'll be great.
  • Three of DIY dance music’s truly esoteric talents meet at Oval Space on 27th January: L.I.E.S boss Ron Morelli, Sex Tags head honcho DJ Sotofett, and richly talented house music veteran Maurice Fulton. Now based in Paris, Brooklyn-born Ron Morelli has played a key role in the renaissance of his home city’s house and techno community. Exploding onto the scene in 2010 - then crowned Resident Advisor’s label of the year only 24 months later - Morelli’s L.I.E.S label conquered the world based out of his Long Island apartment, a one-man operation whose singular, grainy, rough’n’tough electronic vision forged the blueprint for the current crop of lo-fi pretenders to the L.I.E.S throne. Six years later, L.I.E.S. is New York's pre-eminent electronic label, responsible for modern classics from the likes of Legowelt, Delroy Edwards and Terekke; and Morelli, though expatriated from his beloved East Coast city, remains acutely entwined with New York’s burgeoning electronic culture. He’s joined by Sex Tags founder and deeper-than-deep digger DJ Sotofett, who will be playing a special techno set on the night. Never dull, prosaic or predictable, the Nordic wizard regularly tears the roof off clubs in Europe and beyond, with a record collection that starts at classic house, then stretches endlessly in all directions. Equally capable of rocking a Helsinki Pizza Bar with Finnish jazz records, inspiring near-complete nakedness in frenzied UK crowds, and dropping - and pulling off - a winking 80s pop record amongst exquisite vinyl obscurities, there’s a purity and unpredictability to Sotofett’s marathon sets which make him a scintillating DJing presence. Sotofett is more than just a special DJ, however. His Sex Tags Mania and offshoots are some of dance music’s most prolific labels, and many of the their finest releases come from the man himself, with a sound that infuses house and techno with elements of acid, freeform jazz, balearic and old-skool jungle. Maurice Fulton, one of house music’s true originals, rounds out the lineup on 27th January. It’s hard to put a fine point on Maurice Fulton’s long, fragmented, illustrious production career. Across 20 years, under an array of aliases, Fulton was at the vanguard of the UK’s proto-tech house wave; made weird and wonderful techno as part of Syclops; and produced exotic leftfield oddities as Boof, including a revered recent album for Gerd Janson’s Running Back. As a DJ, Fulton is one of the very finest dance music has to offer, a whirling dervish of house, disco and everything else, mixed fast and fearlessly. Quite simply, Maurice Fulton is the genuine article, a dance music savant to those who know, and a DJ we eagerly anticipate welcoming for his Oval Space debut. --- Ron Morelli DJ Sotofett Maurice Fulton --- Admission to Oval Space is at management's sole discretion, pre-purchased tickets do not guarantee entry.
