Displaying a capacity for styles ranging from rhythmic pop to gritty tech-house, Matthew Dear has quickly become one of America’s most revered electronic producers. Between stunning live performances, evolved DJ sets and highly developed recordings, Matthew has perked the ears of the industry’s best. His debut album under his birth name, Leave Luck to Heaven, is sleek minimal techno, containing an extraordinary sense of songcraft and an ambient soul; it was given four stars by Rolling Stone, amongst dozens of other rave reviews and spots on numerous ‘Best of 2003’ lists. The mini-LP Backstroke garnered similar praise in 2004 and served to galvanize his placement amongst the world’s finest minimal electronic producers. He has more recently adopted the Audion alias, which explores a markedly harder edge of his sound, suffused with massive beats and sawtooth synth oscillations. Having closed out 2004 as XLR8R magazine’s “Artist of the Year” in addition to appearances at Mutek, Coachella, and Fabric (London) Dear now turns to Audion for Fall 2005’s Suckfish LP and further touring around the world. Plans for 2006 include a full-length follow-up to Leave Luck to Heaven that will further trace the evolution of the distinct Matthew Dear sound.
