Industry of Machines: Stefan Goldmann, L'estasi Dell'oro, Vasco Ispiran & Axfx

  • Industry of Machines presents 10 Years of Macro, at our usual location: Stefan Goldmann (Macro || Berlin) L'Estasi Dell'Oro LIVE (Field Records | Macro || NYC) Vasco Ispirian LIVE (Made In Green Records || Madrid/NYC) AxFx (Industry of Machines || NYC) For February, IofM proudly presents a 10-year anniversary party for the razor-sharp Macro label, a long-running source for unique, intelligent and underground dancefloor sounds that boldly both ignores and anticipates trends in equal measure. Run by Hardwax buyer Finn Johannsen and minimal legend and techno academic Stefan Goldmann, the label has long been an outpost for DJs seeking left field ideas executed with a keen ear for the dancefloor. Anticipating the emergence of figures like rRoxymore and KiNK and the re-emergence of legends like Patrick Cowley and Oliver Ho, the catalogue is a goldmine of unconventional excellence in house, techno, and more abstract electronic sounds. We welcome Stefan from Berlin on a rare stateside visit, joined by local label representative and avant-techno traveler L'Estasi Dell'Oro. Made In Green's Vasco Ispirian debuts an all-new techno live PA perfectly suited for the occasion. Returning to IofM and to the States after a few years break, Stefan Goldmann and his Macro label are proudly outliers on Berlin's busy club scene, releasing a mixture of house, techno, experimental electronics, and even modern composition that challenges, confounds, and often delights. After getting his start on house and minimal labels like Perlon, Ovum, and Classic, Goldmann's music took a gradual turn towards the avant garde, delving into the more opaque ends of minimalism in line with the esoteric scope of Macro's catalogue, launched in 2007. As minimal became more and more past-tense, the label restlessly moved on with the times, unveiling late-era Raudive material by Oliver Ho that looked forward to his present industrial angle, releasing legends like Santiago Salazar and Peter Kruder, and most strikingly finding rafts of new talent: KiNK, rRoxymore, Elektro Guzzi, L'Estasi Dell'Oro, and others, whose music often defies easy categorization. In the DJ booth, Goldmann is both a master and a wild card, capable of unexpectedly bridging genres, like his label reflects, or of intense, in-the-pocket displays of mixing skill and track selection, fitting for a DJ who spends his time at the top of European echelons for artistic mixing. Quietly one of Brooklyn's most established locals, Christopher Ernst is a producer who first emerged under his own name in 2009 on his Flaneur Audio imprint before moving on as Penelune with dense, drone-based ambient works in 2010 on STL's inscrutable Something imprint. A series of quickly-paced drops on Voodoo Down Records, Flaneur, Berceuse Heroique, and Macro led to his 2015 album on Field Records, announcing L'Estasi Dell'Oro as a unique voice in contemporary techno that clearly followed his previous work while distinguishing itself from the glut of downcast, droning, and dreary techno currently flooding clubs. His music remains deeper and stranger than the vast majority of his contemporaries, and he has recently further differentiated it with the addition of live female vocals and increasingly irregular rhythmic innovations. As a DJ he's likewise known for uniqueness, occasionally layering blown-out psychedelic rock over dance rhythms or shifting into fusion and breakbeats. Like Stefan, it has been some time since we invited him to IofM, and he returns with a new live set in advance of forthcoming 12-inches on Field and Macro. Returning to IofM after a few months break and a striking DJ set at our November night, we're pleased to announce the debut of a new live techno set by Vasco Ispirian to set the tone for the Macro crew. Since we last invited him, Vasco has been busy playing in Barcelona, Madrid, and Los Angeles and belatedly getting some attention in New York via our Bossa and Jupiter Disco nights and various other events. We're happy to see him rising and even happier to hear his new live set in support of Stefan and Chris; keep an eye out for his Made In Green imprint, set to drop this spring.
