Hyperreality Festival for Club Culture by Wiener Festwochen

  • HYPERREALITY The Wiener Festwochen’s new festival format schedules four nights of experimental electronic music in the context of global club cultures. For HYPERREALITY, Neugebäude Castle opens its doors with several stages in order to test the central idea of the club as a place where social constraints and mechanisms can be overruled and a new society can be devised. At the Festival for Club Culture, neither your feet nor your head should keep still. Important innovations have always emerged from resistance to capitalism’s drive to homogenise culture. In the words of Run DMC, “It goes a little something like this”: Adolescents from a residential area that was not only socially marginalized, but was actually cut off from New York in the 1970s by the construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway, invented a technique of collaging vinyl records in a Dadaist style: Hip-Hop. In Detroit, within a few short years, the American dream became a nightmare as the machines of the auto industry fell silent. The people responded by taking their sound back into the empty halls: Techno. This tradition of resistance is reflected in a multitude of musical streams. Thanks to this tradition, innovative artistic positions are being created today more than ever. The Festival for Club Culture provides performance spaces for current developments of this kind. Thus, at HYPERREALITY Showcases, the New York event series GHE20G0TH1K, which became a global impetus of autonomous youth culture, meets with Chilean Reggaeton stars like Tomasa del Real. Showcases like those of the Portuguese label Príncipe and NON use their perspectives to highlight binary and colonial structures of the club culture. Artists at the interface of performance, pop, and visual art, such as Princess Nokia and Holly Herndon, who infiltrate queer and political messages into pop music and rap, are also on the program, which is united by a belief in music and art as expressions of living situations, and a will to change social realities, which stands above the market.
