  • If there’s a sound you associate with Berlin’s 1980s underground, there’s a good chance Gareth Jones and Alexander Hacke had a hand in it. Hacke joined the toweringly influential Einstürzende Neubauten shortly after the band’s formation in 1980 at only 15 years of age, and was also a member of cult favorites such as Sentimentale Jugend and Mona Mur & die Mieter. Jones worked as producer and mixing engineer at the iconic Hansa Tonstudio, adding an industrial edge to recordings from the likes of Depeche Mode, Tuxedomoon and Fad Gadget. Their paths crossed when Jones contributed production to the Neubauten albums Halber Mensch (1985) and Fünf auf der nach oben offenen Richterskala (1987). In this talk at XYZ, Jones and Hacke will discuss their tenacious work with Einstürzende Neubauten, Berlin in the ’80s and what it means to create a signature sound. http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/bass-camp-berlin-2017
