  • Parallax is the coming together of two ostensibly very different musical traditions. The Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin has been one of Germany’s leading orchestras for over 70 years. Having recently announced the first season of new Music Director Robin Ticciati, the DSO reaffirms its commitment to recontextualising modern and contemporary classical music. Berlin Atonal has become one of Europe’s largest platforms for developing and presenting innovative music, with a continued emphasis on reinterpreting the possibilities for contemporary music with and against the background of twentieth century compositional and sound-making practices. The Parallax project is the newest attempt of these two institutions to bridge both traditions and create a new forum for their mutual enlightenment and stimulation. Taking place at Atonal’s homebase in Kraftwerk Berlin, Parallax invites electronic producers to respond directly to a rich programme of orchestral music from the baroque era to modern micropolyphony. Explosive new producer Sophie Schnell a.k.a Pyur will collaborate with one of contemporary electronic music’s foremost talents working in electro-acoustics Valerio Tricoli. Together they have composed a piece in response to, and performed after, Charles Ives’ seminal “The Unanswered Question”. Paul Jebanasam - the Sri-Lankan via Bristol electronic producer who makes some of the most cerebral, concept driven music in the genre - has composed “Cycλomorphia” for electronics and strings in conversation with György Ligeti’s “Atmosphères.” Finally, the legendary pioneer of dub techno, one half of Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound and Maurizio, and classically trained percussionist Moritz von Oswald performs, with the orchestra under the direction of Robin Ticciati, “Reminiscenza”, his piece based around a reading of Debussy’s “Le Mer”.
